£12m Rangers record breaker wants manager job but throws hat in ring for other Ibrox role if he can’t get it
He has been the Rangers’ record signing for 25 years, but is Tore Andre Flo poised to make a surprise comeback to Ibrox in the dugout?
The man himself acknowledges that it may be a long way off, but he still hopes for it.
When Norwegian striker Flo joined Rangers in 2000 for £12 million from Chelsea, he caused a stir. He scored 38 goals in 72 games before rejoining Sunderland in the Premier League.
However, he came just as Celtic’s fortunes were turning, and although he won the League Cup and Scottish Cup, he was never able to secure a Scottish league championship.
He was a member of a team led by Barry Ferguson, who is currently in charge of resolving the present problems at Ibrox. Flo, who has only managed in the Norwegian lower leagues with Sogdal thus far, responded to the question of whether he would like to succeed him this summer by saying to goldenpanda.com: “Me? Yes, I would really like to join the Rangers, but I don’t think I’m ready for that right now. Why not one day? I would be thrilled to get the chance to run that enormous football team.
“Barry Ferguson… He is a manager who is aware of Rangers’ pressure, which is, in my opinion, a very critical quality for a manager to possess.
“He is well-liked by the fans and is familiar with the team. In my opinion, he need to be included in the conversation when the owners choose who will be hired permanently in the summer.
“He is a tough individual. He could handle some pressure, as I mentioned before. He served as our captain. He has a rough mentality. He is a combative individual. Although I don’t know him directly as a coach or manager, I am aware of his thinking and believe he is capable of handling that kind of pressure.
How about assistant to whoever ends up in the dugout this summer, though, if the 51-year-old isn’t getting the top position just yet? Flo’s response was straightforward: “Yeah, I would love to do that.”
The current favorites for the bookies are Steven Gerrard and Marco Rose, with Sean Dyche being one of the other possibilities that is frequently brought up. Flo, however, was not naming anyone and continues to believe Ferguson has a shot.
“I think it’s hard for me to give you any names on who could lead the team or who should be the next Rangers manager because there aren’t many people available,” he continued. Do they pursue someone who has achieved success in other places? I don’t know if that would occur. They would therefore need to wait a little while to see who is available, in my opinion.
