2 Neighboring Homes Catch Fire in Bromley, 3 Suffer Minor Injuries
BROMLEY – A residential street in Bromley was the scene of a dramatic incident late Tuesday evening as two neighboring homes were engulfed in flames, leading to a swift emergency response and three individuals sustaining minor injuries.
The fire broke out around 8:40 PM on Tennyson Avenue, a quiet residential area just south of Bromley town centre. According to London Fire Brigade, the blaze appears to have originated in one of the homes before quickly spreading to the adjoining property, causing significant damage to both structures.
Firefighters from Bromley, Beckenham, and Orpington stations rushed to the scene within minutes of the first emergency call. In total, six fire engines and over 35 firefighters battled the flames for more than two hours before the situation was brought under control shortly after 11 PM.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by plumes of thick black smoke rising into the night sky. One resident, Linda Carmichael, who lives two doors down from the affected properties, described the scene as “chaotic and terrifying.”
“It was just after dinner when we heard a loud noise,” said Carmichael. “Next thing, we saw flames coming from the back of the house. The whole street came out. We were just praying everyone got out safely.”
Fortunately, all occupants of the two homes managed to evacuate before the fire consumed the majority of the buildings. London Ambulance Service confirmed that three people, including a teenage girl, were treated at the scene for minor injuries such as smoke inhalation and shock. None required hospitalization.
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade praised the rapid response of the firefighters and the cooperation of residents, which helped prevent a more serious outcome.
“The fast action of our crews prevented the fire from spreading to nearby homes,” said Station Commander Marcus Doyle, who was at the scene. “We urge all residents to ensure their smoke alarms are working properly—it undoubtedly saved lives tonight.”
Investigators are currently working to determine the exact cause of the fire. Early reports suggest it may have started due to an electrical fault in the kitchen of the first home, but a full investigation is underway.
As of Wednesday morning, both properties remain cordoned off, with structural engineers assessing the damage. Authorities have arranged temporary accommodation for the displaced families, who are receiving support from local councils and community organizations.
Bromley Council released a statement commending the emergency services and promising to assist the affected families with immediate housing and longer-term needs. Local residents have also begun organizing donation drives and temporary aid for those impacted.
Though the incident has left a mark on the quiet neighborhood, the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Seeing everyone come together has been heartening,” said resident James Ford. “It reminds you that in times of crisis, Bromley really pulls together.”
The London Fire Brigade is expected to release a detailed report once their investigation concludes. In the meantime, residents are being encouraged to check fire safety protocols in their homes and report any concerns.
