The Duke Chronicle recently published player spotlights on two incoming freshman big men, Cameron Williams and Joaquim “JoJo” Boumtje Boumtje.
Boumtje Boumtje has been a frequent topic of conversation throughout the summer, but what stands out most in Duke’s recently released practice footage is his physical development—he’s just 17 years old, and only 66 days past his birthday.
Rather than coming up through a U.S. high school program, Boumtje Boumtje developed his game with FC Barcelona, and that European background clearly shaped his style. According to the Chronicle, his approach reflects the trademarks of European basketball: fluid movement, disciplined spacing, and sharp tactical awareness that keep him in optimal position. That foundation translates into defensive versatility, making him a threat on the perimeter rather than boxing him in as a traditional rim-protector.
It remains to be seen how that defense holds up at the college level, but his offensive game already looks further along than expected.
As for Williams, his high school coach has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant. He shoots comfortably from deep and also attacks the lane effectively. The Chronicle highlights his value around the basket—grabbing boards and converting inside looks, which he did consistently in high school. With his sizable frame, the St. Mary’s product can bulldoze his way to the rim and generate repeated scoring chances, as shown in a pair of clips where he uses his strength to finish easily underneath.
Williams is also a strong rebounder and may currently have an edge over Boumtje Boumtje on the defensive end.
His frame is long, though he doesn’t yet have Boumtje Boumtje’s sheer power. Still, with his smooth mobility, explosive athleticism, and high basketball IQ, his ceiling is enormous.
Both freshmen carry the kind of upside that suggests they could become truly exceptional players.
