‘I Love Him’ – The Middlesbrough Player Rob Edwards Already Has Very High Hopes For

Rob Edwards has made no secret of his admiration for Middlesbrough striker Tommy Conway, revealing he has very high hopes for the 22-year-old as the new Championship season approaches.

Conway, who arrived at the Riverside last summer, had an encouraging debut campaign in red, netting 13 goals across all competitions. And despite the club’s continued efforts to recruit another centre-forward during the current transfer window, Conway is widely expected to play a leading role under Edwards.

One clear indication of the head coach’s faith in the striker came when Conway was handed Boro’s iconic number nine shirt ahead of the new season – a number steeped in history at the club and reserved for those expected to lead the line with distinction.

Speaking about the young forward, Edwards did not hold back in his praise. “I love him,” the head coach said with a smile. “He’s a really intelligent player, works incredibly hard, and has that knack for being in the right place at the right time. That sort of instinct can’t be taught. His attitude has been fantastic since the first day of pre-season.”

Conway’s style seems tailor-made for the high-intensity, aggressive brand of football Edwards is looking to instil on Teesside. The striker’s tireless running, willingness to press defenders, and constant movement off the ball align well with the head coach’s tactical demands.

In another show of trust, Edwards handed Conway the captain’s armband during last week’s pre-season friendly at Bradford City. Though the responsibility is being rotated throughout the summer, the decision to trial Conway in the role hints at the respect he commands within the group – and his potential as a long-term leader.

“We’re still assessing things with the captaincy now that Jonny [Howson] has moved on,” Edwards said. “But giving Tommy the armband at Bradford was as much about seeing how he handles that added responsibility as it was about his character. He leads by example with the way he trains and the way he plays.”

For his part, Conway appears to be embracing the opportunity. Although a recent goal was chalked off for offside during the Bradford game, his sharp movement and determination to find space were evident throughout. He’s not resting on last season’s accomplishments – he’s looking to raise his level.

“I want to kick on,” Conway said recently. “Last year was a good start, but I know there’s a lot more to come from me. The manager’s belief gives me confidence. I want to repay that trust and help the team push for promotion.”

With a full pre-season under his belt, growing trust from the head coach, and the number nine shirt on his back, Tommy Conway is emerging as a central figure in Middlesbrough’s plans for the 2025/26 season. And if Rob Edwards’ early admiration is anything to go by, Boro fans could be in for something special.
