3 midfielders Derby County should eye if Harrison Armstrong can’t return next season
Since acquiring him in the winter, Derby County’s loan midfielder Harrison Armstong has taken center stage in their squad.
Derby County struggled to bolster their roster for the second half of the season during a tough winter transfer window. Many targets escaped DCFC’s grasp, with some choosing not to relocate to Pride Park.
Harrison Armstrong, however, signed on the day of the deadline. Although there were some concerns about temporarily signing an unknown 18-year-old, he came from Everton with a stellar reputation.
However, since then, Armstrong has made a big impression on the senior stage and established himself as a vital member of John Eustace’s team. Although the teenager may also play for the Toffees in the first team next season, his performance has put him on Blackburn Rovers’ radar ahead of the summer.
Given the alternative choices available to the midfield player, Derby County may not be able to bring Armstrong back for the entire season.
Having said that, we select three midfield players that ought to be considered at Pride Park in the event that Armstrong is unable to return.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s Oscar Fraulo
With a return to parent club Borussia Monchengladbach imminent, DCFC could do much worse than rekindle Derby County’s interest in the Danish midfielder Fraulo, who was allegedly eyed for a switch during the winter transfer window.
The 21-year-old has played senior football in Holland, Germany, and Denmark and has managed two goals and two assists in 22 Eredivisie appearances while on loan at FC Utrecht.
Fraulo should be ready for Championship action, and it looks quite likely that he will be available whenever he returns to Monchengladbach.
Amougou Mathis of Chelsea
In the winter, Chelsea acquired Saint-Etienne’s 19-year-old midfielder Mathis Amougou, who had made a remarkable debut in Ligue 1. Although the France youth international is expected to have a bright career, a summer loan appears likely considering the depth of midfielders Stamford Bridge has ahead of him.
Chelsea may want to move the 19-year-old to a higher division, possibly to sister club RC Strasbourg, because a Derby County swoop might be seen as ambitious. However, the Rams might give consistent minutes if English football experience is preferred.
It is important to note that DCFC will only be a viable target if they are able to avoid Championship relegation, which will include Armstrong, Amougou, and the other two players on this list.
Humphreys Cameron, of Ipswich Town
Last but not least is Cameron Humphreys, who has excelled while on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, a team vying for promotion in League One.
The 21-year-old has played 39 games in League One, contributing seven goals and six assists from midfield. He left Ipswich Town after their promotion in search of more senior opportunities.
Humphreys might have trouble finding opportunities even if Ipswich is demoted. With his contract expiring in 2026, Derby County may be able to give him the Championship opportunity he deserves, possibly even permanently.
