“False hope” – Cautious Sheffield Wednesday reaction issued to big Dejphon Chansiri, takeover news

In order to end owner Dejphon Chansiri’s contentious reign at Sheffield Wednesday, pundit Don Goodman thinks the team must find a buyer.

After a strong start to the season, Wednesday had become unexpected play-off hopefuls, but a slew of off-field problems has caused their promotion dreams to fall apart since the beginning of the year.

When manager Danny Rohl was turned down for a move to Southampton in December, there was a communication breakdown between him and Chansiri, which led to a heated public argument during the January transfer window. This was the beginning of the turmoil behind the scenes at Hillsborough.

The owner came under fire again earlier this month after it was discovered that he had not paid the players’ March wages on time, and the club barely avoided a three-window transfer ban after veering dangerously close to the maximum 30-day limit allowed for late payment of player salaries and HMRC debt in a single year. However, Rohl and Chansiri did eventually work out their differences.

The Owls’ uncertainty is far from over, as it appears more likely that Rohl will leave in the summer due to new interest from Southampton, Leicester City, and RB Leipzig. The supporters expressed their disapproval of Chansiri during Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Oxford United, a result which   club drop down to 14th in the Championship table.

Prior to the match, Chansiri wrote an open letter to fans stating that he would be open to selling to “the right individual, or group, to take our club forward” even though he had not received any proposals to purchase the team.

Three groups, including two from the US and one from the UK, are reportedly considering investing in Wednesday, according to a report published in The Star on Monday morning. However, no offers or communication have been made as of yet.

Issues with Don Goodman The takeover claim for Sheffield Wednesday

Goodman acknowledged that a takeover would not ensure Wednesday’s return to the Premier League, but he underlined that finding a new owner is crucial if they are to move forward in an exclusive interview with Football League World.

“I think the most important thing for anybody connected with Sheffield Wednesday, particularly the fans, would be to get Dejphon Chansiri out of the football club,” stated Goodman.

“It’s obvious that things have gotten really poisonous, and I can see why Sheffield Wednesday would be of interest.

“They are a big club that has collapsed into League One after being in the doldrums for far too long.

However, we have witnessed their stadium hopping and they draw sizable audiences.

“Can they get to the Premier League? Just because new owners come in, it does not mean that Sheffield Wednesday, or any other club for that matter, will get to the Premier League.

“We’ve seen it so many times, it’s all about recruitment and having the right people in place at the top of the club, the coaching staff and the players.

“If they get that right, then maybe, but for now, it’s really important that the club finds a stable footing.”

The reign of Sheffield Wednesday’s Dejphon Chansiri might be coming to an end.

For a long time, Wednesday supporters have believed that there is little chance that Chansiri would even consider selling the club, but his position may now be changing.

The increasingly frustrated Owls fan base staged another protest against Chansiri during the defeat to Oxford on Saturday as they turned their backs on the game in the 10th minute, representing the number of years since his takeover of the club, and similar demonstrations are likely to take place before the end of the season.

The revelation that three parties are weighing up a potential bid for the club provides a glimmer of hope for Wednesday, but takeovers can often be a lengthy process, and with no deal imminent, it could be a turbulent summer at Hillsborough, particularly as Rohl is widely expected to move on.
