5 likely QPR candidates to replace Marti Cifuentes, including Tottenham man and ex-Lyon boss.
As Marti Cifuentes takes gardening leave, here are some of the most likely candidates for the QPR job.
QPR will search for a new manager now that the Championship season is over. Despite leading the Hoops to success in consecutive seasons, Marti Cifuentes’ tenure appears to be coming to an end.
After being linked with the West Brom job, Cifuentes fell out with QPR chief Christian Nourry. He is now on leave and expected to leave the club. Nourry said of the decision, “This is obviously a disappointing situation for everyone involved.” I completely understand and appreciate the supporters’ frustrations at this time. As a club, we are working to resolve this matter as soon as possible so that we can begin serious preparations for the future.”
A number of bosses are now being linked with QPR jobs, and we have compiled a list of the most likely candidates so far.
Sage is being linked to the position after leaving Lyon earlier this year, which he described as a’market opportunity’ for owner John Textor. Sage’s second job was in Lyon, where he finished runner-up in the French Cup.
“I’m now ready for a new project,” he recently told the Athletic. “I’d like to start next season in France or elsewhere in Europe, preferably in one of the big five leagues.” My dream is to work in England because I believe it is the best country and league, and the Championship is a good league as well.
“My second job will probably be the most important. According to Jose Mourinho, becoming a coach comes after being fired for the first time. It was difficult to lose my job, but the most difficult thing was leaving Lyon, which is my club and hometown.
Ryan Mason
Although Mason has not held a full-time managerial position, he has proven to be an effective coach at Tottenham Hotspur. Mason was a first-team coach under Antonio Conte and remained as an assistant to Ange Postecoglou after impressing him.
It is uncommon for coaches to remain under different regimes, but Mason is well-liked by the club’s upper management. It would be risky to hire a boss with no experience, but Mason will have to start somewhere.
After initially impressing as caretaker manager at Bournemouth, O’Neil’s poor performance led to his dismissal shortly after being appointed permanent manager. During his tenure at Wolves, he led the team to a 14th place finish in the Premier League. However, he was fired after struggling at the start of the current season.
Concerningly, O’Neil has struggled to maintain long-term consistency in both roles, but he has made an immediate impact on both. His next job will most likely be in the championship.
Richie Wellens
Wellens has been the manager of Leyton Orient since 2022, and he has done an excellent job, leading the club to promotion from League Two and now a play-off finish in League One this season, finishing sixth. He has previously worked at Oldham Athletic, Swindon Town, Salford City, and Doncaster Rovers.
He won League Two with Swindon, and the EFL Trophy with Salford City. Aside from Doncaster, Wellens has had a positive impact at the majority of his clubs, and he is only 45 years old.
Jason Tindall
Tindall, a former defender, has gained popularity as Eddie Howe’s number two at Newcastle. He previously managed AFC Bournemouth for five months, but lacks experience as a first-team manager.
Tindall previously stated of his managerial ambitions after filling in for Howe during the Newcastle manager’s illness: “That was never my intention (to replace Howe); it was not what I wanted at the time; it was just that the manager needed a break to figure out what his next chapter should be, so the opportunity came my way and it was one I couldn’t pass up. It’s not something I’m thinking about; I’m content with my job and intend to stay there.”
