Exclusive: Don Goodman drops claim on Luka Modric situation at Swansea City

The Croatian’s investment in the Welsh team was arguably the most bizarre and amazing story of the 2024–25 second division season. Fabrizio Romano made it known that he would acquire a minority stake in the team; according to The Athletic, he currently owns 5% of it.
Although it is unlikely that the midfield player will be heavily involved in day-to-day operations at Swansea.com Stadium, Zeidane Inoussa, who joined the team in the summer, stated that discussions with Modric influenced his choice to join.
He was supposed to remain a Real Madrid player. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way for the former Ballon d’Or winner. He became a free agent after Real decided not to extend their contract to him. He is now planning to purchase a Swansea house.
Now this doesn’t mean that he’s going to be playing under Alan Sheehan next summer. A footballing role at boardroom level has been planned for him later down the line, but he still wants to play at the top level if he can, according to his national team boss.
After six seasons without playing in the top division, the Swans’ chances of returning to the English first division would undoubtedly increase if he joined them for the upcoming season.
But according to Sky Sports analyst Don Goodman, the Croatian’s off-field influence alone won’t be sufficient to propel City closer to the top of the Championship.
“I’m not sure how Luka Modric moving to Swansea, to the area, is going to help them on the football pitch, in reality,” the former striker stated in an exclusive interview with Football League World. It’s really difficult to believe that Swansea will compete at the top end right now, until all of the Championship clubs have completed their transfer activity.
“They had a strong finish, there’s no doubt about it, but I think there will be stronger candidates than Swansea to finish in the top six or top 10 next season.”
