Burnley have identified Jordan James, a former Birmingham City player, as a possible replacement for Josh Brownhill should the club captain leave.

That is according to journalist Alan Nixon, who claims the Clarets have identified the Stade-Rennais midfielder as a potential summer signing.

This season, the 20-year-old has made 24 appearances in France, scoring once. He joined from Birmingham City for a cost that could exceed £8 million with add-ons.

The 29-year-old, who scored an incredible 18 goals as Burnley won automatic promotion from the Championship last season, may depart for free with his current contract set to expire.

Scott Parker’s team is naturally eager to keep Brownhill at Turf Moor for the foreseeable future, but the captain will have plenty of options.

Burnley is reportedly interested in Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Çaki, in addition to James.

According to French daily L’Equipe, the Clarets are leading the race, despite Monaco’s interest.

It comes amid speculation over the future of current number one James Trafford, who has been popular with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United for the past year or so.

The 22-year-old recently finished a record-breaking season, keeping 29 of Burnley’s 30 clean sheets while conceding only 16 league goals.

Çaki, a Turkish international, has earned 31 caps for his country. He maintained 18 clean sheets for Trabzonspor this season while surrendering 52 goals.

The summer transfer window is officially open, with one important restriction. Due to the FIFA Club World Cup, the window will be divided into two sections.

The first transfer window will open early and run from Sunday, June 1 until Tuesday, June 10. It will then temporarily close before reopening on Monday, June 16. The second transfer window will operate as usual before ending on Monday, September 1.
