Exclusive: Don Goodman reveals what effect big Gino Pozzo sale may have at Watford FC

Don Goodman, a pundit, believes Gino Pozzo’s decision to sell Udinese and focus on Watford is positive news for the Hornets, but only if he invests more in the club. Despite a strong start to the season, Watford finished 14th in the Championship..

Just days after the season ended, Pozzo made the controversial decision to fire popular head coach Tom Cleverley, replacing him with Paulo Pezzolano, who had been out of work since being fired by La Liga club Real Valladolid in November.

Pozzo expressed his commitment to leading the Hornets back to the Premier League in a statement following Cleverley’s departure. It appears that the Italian will now focus solely on events at Vicarage Road.

Pozzo is selling Udinese, which he and his family have owned for 39 years, for €150 million (£125 million). According to the Watford Observer, he will now focus solely on Watford, believing there is “considerably greater potential for growth and success” with the Hertfordshire outfit.

Don Goodman reacts to surprise Gino Pozzo and Watford developments.

Goodman, speaking exclusively to Football League World, suggested that Pozzo may now be willing to invest more in Watford and demonstrate greater ambition after selling Udinese. He also encouraged Pozzo to bring stability to Vicarage Road.

“I guess you could say that, if it is to be believed that they are selling Udinese to focus fully on Watford, it has to be good news for them,” according to Goodman.

“In reality, it could imply more investment and a more obvious ambition.

“When you look at Udinese, they are a middle-of-the-road Italian Serie A team, and the history of how they have hired and fired managers is very similar to how they have operated at Watford.

“I think they need stability at Watford, and if the Pozzo family selling Udinese will give that football club and element of stability, then it can only be a positive thing for Watford fans.”

Despite the sale to Udinese, Watford fans will continue to doubt Gino Pozzo.

Watford owner Gino Pozzo

Pozzo’s recent statements have raised eyebrows among Watford supporters, who have previously criticised him for his lack of communication. Additionally, his decision to sell Udinese to focus on the club has surprised many.

While some may wonder why Pozzo has suddenly decided to focus on the Hornets, it appears that he is determined to bring success back to Vicarage Road, and the appointment of Pezzolano, who has won three promotions in Uruguay, Brazil, and Spain, is a clear statement of intent.

Pozzo plans to use funds from the sale of Udinese to support Pezzolano in the transfer market and retain key players like Imran Louza, Georgi Chakvetadze, and Kwadwo Baah.
