Opinion: Sheffield United Should Target Young Premier League Winger
As Sheffield United prepare for another gruelling Championship season following their play-off final heartbreak, it’s clear where the recruitment focus should lie — attacking reinforcements, particularly out wide.
The Blades showed real signs of progress under their current setup, often lining up in a 4-2-3-1 throughout the 2024/25 campaign. However, as the business end of the season approached, a switch to a more traditional 4-4-2 yielded immediate results. This system brought about a noticeable improvement in fluidity and directness, particularly in the play-off semi-finals against Bristol City.
But while the tactical shift helped, it also laid bare a serious issue: Sheffield United simply don’t have the squad depth to sustain that system over a long campaign.
This was no more evident than in the final against Sunderland. Once again, Tyrese Campbell — a key outlet for pace and direct running — was withdrawn between the 60th and 70th minute, as he often was throughout the season. His departure sucked the pace out of the attack, and the introduction of Callum O’Hare signalled a shift back to a more possession-based style, undermining the very system that had been so effective in the lead-up.
Compounding matters, Gustavo Hamer — arguably the Blades’ best player — was forced off soon after. In his place came Ben Brereton Diaz, a player whose second loan spell left much to be desired. Within minutes, Diaz picked up a knock of his own, and United’s attacking shape completely collapsed.
This is the crux of the issue: depth and like-for-like replacements. When injuries and substitutions force tactical changes, it shows that the squad lacks the variety and flexibility required to stick to a winning formula.
That’s why Sheffield United must dip into the Premier League market — specifically targeting young, hungry wingers from top-flight clubs who are desperate for regular football. Not only do these players often bring raw pace and energy — something this squad sorely lacks once Campbell is off the pitch — but they are typically more adaptable and tactically disciplined than their older counterparts.
Premier League academies are brimming with talented wide players looking for their breakthrough, and the Championship is the perfect proving ground. Whether it’s a loan move or a permanent deal, the Blades need to prioritise bringing in a young winger who can run the channels, stretch defences, and pose a threat in behind — particularly when games open up in the second half.
A couple of well-judged additions could transform Sheffield United’s attack from functional to genuinely dangerous. And given how close they came to promotion, that extra edge could make all the difference next time.
With the right recruitment, Paul Heckingbottom’s side can not only return to the play-offs but go one step further. A dynamic young winger from the Premier League might just be the missing piece.
