‘Deep in the weeds’: Burnley director provides squad planning update ahead of Premier League return

‘Deep in the weeds’: Burnley director gives team planning update ahead of Premier League return.

The Clarets’ only business since the end of the 2024/25 season has been to confirm the permanent signings of loanees Bashir Humphreys, Jaidon Anthony, Marcus Edwards, and Zian Fleming.

All four have signed four-year contracts at Turf Moor after helping Scott Parker’s side win automatic promotion from the Championship.

While it’s otherwise been relatively quiet on the transfer front, director Stuart Hunt insists there’s much going on behind the scenes.

When asked how Burnley plans to stay in the Premier League next season, Hunt responded, “That is the big question, and we’re doing our best.”

“Squad planning has already started and there’s simply a lot of preparation behind the scenes that’s going on to make sure that we execute things correctly. “I should say we’re extremely eager for the planning. Scott and Alan [Pace] and our technical team are deep in the weeds now.”

Promotion to the top flight was shortly followed by some important news about the club’s academy, which has now regained Category One classification.

“That was crucial,” Hunt continued. “It was one of our main goals after becoming a Premier League team. The preparation began well before we were promoted, but it was an important part of it.

“We need to be able to attract quality young players so that we can build and fill our ranks.

“We want those players to be local, to be in our catchment area, so we can see homegrown potential, retain them here, and eventually see them play for their first team.

“It’s one of our goals and objectives to become a developmental team, a developmental club.

“Whether that talent comes locally, we’d prefer them to come locally, or from abroad, we want to bring them in, make them better and if they choose to leave, then they’ll leave a better person, a better talent, a better player. If they decide to stay, that’s excellent; they’ll be an important part of our club.”
