The manager has interviewed several potential candidates, and a decision is nearing completion. However, according to one optimistic source, the expectation for an announcement on Monday seems to be diminishing as the day progresses.
The club aimed to resolve this matter quite some time ago and is eager to finalize a decision, which explains the rapidly changing, conflicting, and at times confusing narratives emerging, as board members differ in their preferences for the new leader.
Nevertheless, it is believed that an announcement is likely to occur this week, which will be welcomed by Cardiff fans eager to see their club advance with season plans. Currently, the situation is unclear and still fraught with uncertainty. There are reportedly details that need to be finalized, and the phrase “lots of moving parts” has been mentioned multiple times.
This situation appears to be reaching its peak following increased interest in Nathan Jones by Cardiff over the weekend.
The board submitted their recommendations for Vincent Tan’s approval after conducting interviews with Mehmet Dalman and Ken Choo, but it was noted that another potential candidate could still be involved in the discussions.
Since this news arose just days prior to Charlton’s victory in the League One play-off final, it seems unlikely that the candidate was not Jones, a lifelong supporter of City.
While Jones has been a serious contender, complications arise from his remaining three years on his contract at The Valley, which would demand considerable compensation for him and his coaching staff. Additionally, Charlton is unlikely to permit their promotion-winning manager to depart.
Indeed, even this morning, trusted journalist Rich Cawley from south London dismissed the possibility of the 52-year-old being allowed to leave, stating flatly that there was “no chance” of the Welshman being granted an exit. It appears that Charlton is taking a strong stance on this issue, and rightfully so.
Bringing in Jones would greatly excite Cardiff fans and likely boost season ticket sales. However, it is not without its challenges, and Cardiff’s management is aware that there are simpler and more cost-effective alternatives.
So, who else is in the running? Aaron Ramsey has had supporters in the boardroom from the very beginning, and the idea of him stepping in as the next manager is persistent.
This situation coincides with the fact that there are numerous complexities regarding the Wales midfielder, who returned from a family vacation late last week, particularly since he is still an active player.
Ramsey is also said to have requested assurances on several issues during the hiring process, should he receive the nod, including the need for an experienced support staff, player recruitment, and the overall management of the football operations at the club.
Establishing someone to oversee that last point would alleviate some of the responsibilities from Ramsey, allowing him to continue playing as he aims to participate in the 2026 World Cup with Wales, a goal he remains passionate about. Perhaps Mark Allen, a Cardiff native who was brought in to manage the recruitment process, would be suitable in that role?
Ramsey’s return to Cardiff as a player has not gone as he had hoped, having faced serious injuries and relegation, but appointing him as manager could signify the beginning of a significant rebuilding effort, which many Cardiff fans believe is necessary. He could still achieve considerable success in this new, hybrid role. However, more cautious or skeptical fans might prefer a more experienced manager at the helm.
Brian Barry-Murphy would represent a similar kind of appointment. Like Ramsey, he has had proponents from the outset and would be inclined towards a long-term strategy rather than a stopgap solution. Currently, he is part of the coaching staff at Leicester City alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, a situation that may also be deemed a moving part; however, it is considerably less complicated than that of Ramsey.
Other candidates such as Ian Evatt and Des Buckingham have also been interviewed for the position, but discussions around them have quieted in recent days, while individuals like Rob Edwards and Ruben Selles are thought to be seeking opportunities at higher levels.
