Luton Town: An Amazing Display of Assistance

One team’s wish came true and another’s was dashed in yesterday’s exciting National League Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium.

Poor old Southend United will have to put up with at least another season of non-league football, while Oldham Athletic realized their dream in a match that went to extra time at Wembley Stadium. After ninety minutes, with the score tied at one, Southend United gained the lead early in the first extra period and must have felt they had a foot in League Two.

However, Oldham Athletic put up a valiant fight and scored twice in the second extra time to secure the final promotion position this season. Oldham’s accomplishment is very significant because they were the first previous Premier League team to leave the Football League.

The National League Play-Off Final, however, was particularly noteworthy since it was held in front of a record 52,115 spectators, which was (barely) larger than the number of people that came to Wembley Stadium to watch the League Two Play-Off Final between AFC Wimbledon and Walsall.

Our congratulations to Oldham Athletic and our condolences to Southend United, but perhaps the true winners of the day were the supporters who, in spite of the transportation issues, crammed into Wembley Stadium to watch a fantastic game and occasion.

Since work at Wembley Park tube station ensured that the station was not in use, the supporters had to make alternative transportation arrangements to watch their sides at Wembley Stadium.

As Hatters, we are all too familiar with the joy and anguish involved when it comes to the Play-Off Finals, having experienced the joy and despair of both winning and losing in our recent history.
