Exclusive:Ryan Mason has been appointed West Brom manager

Ryan Mason has departed from Tottenham to assume the role of West Brom head coach under a three-year contract.

After the Championship club parted ways with Tony Mowbray on 21 April, Mason rapidly became a frontrunner for the position.

Spurs’ tumultuous 2024-25 season, which culminated in their Europa League victory and concluded on May 25, obliged West Brom to wait for a while. Nevertheless, Mason opted to accept their offer and embark on his managerial career after a brief vacation.

Mason expressed to the club’s website, “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been appointed head coach of West Bromwich Albion.”

“This is a massive club with an amazing infrastructure and a phenomenal fan base, and I am thrilled about what we can accomplish together.

After extensive discussions with the board and club personnel, I am convinced that Albion is the ideal place for me, and I eagerly anticipate getting started.

“I will come with a great deal of enthusiasm, dedication, and ambition, and I eagerly anticipate a bright future together at this wonderful club.”

Mason, at 33 years of age, becomes the youngest manager in the Championship, marking the end of his seven-year coaching stint at Tottenham.

After sustaining a skull fracture during a Premier League game for Hull against Chelsea, Mason was compelled to end his playing career in 2018. He had advanced through Spurs’ academy and made 70 appearances for his childhood club.

The coach, who was born in London, will take on his first managerial position in the 2025–26 season, ten years after he earned his sole cap for England in a match against Italy.

In October, the well-regarded coach Mason discussed a move to Belgian club Anderlecht, but he and Spurs ultimately agreed to stay with Spurs. This decision allowed him to contribute to the team’s first trophy win since 2008.

Mason, who has previously served as caretaker at Tottenham and led them in the 2021 Carabao Cup final, has long been regarded as a future management candidate.

After retiring as a player, Mason began coaching at the youth level for Spurs. Three years later, he was promoted to Antonio Conte’s coaching staff after a brief seven-game stint as interim manager.

After Conte’s exit, another caretaker role emerged in 2023, and Ange Postecoglou retained Mason as part of his coaching staff.

Mason, following two more years as the first-team coach at Tottenham, will assume control of West Brom after their ninth-place finish in the Championship.

Mason, whose contract with Spurs ended this month, will be responsible for guiding West Brom back to the top flight for the first time since 2021.
