Leeds Rumoured to Reignite Interest in Academy Graduate
Leeds United have been strongly linked with a potential summer move for Kalvin Phillips, as the club gears up for life back in the Premier League. The midfield anchor, who rose through the academy ranks at Elland Road, could theoretically be a popular returning figure—but complications around finances and fitness may stand in the way.
Since making his high-profile switch to Manchester City in 2022, Phillips’ time in the top flight has been difficult. Limited appearances under Pep Guardiola, followed by a disappointing loan spell at West Ham, have left his future in limbo.
As Leeds look to back manager Daniel Farke during what’s expected to be a hectic transfer window, Phillips’ name has emerged again. However, the likelihood of a reunion appears slim, especially with talk of a £10 million valuation now circulating.

Leeds’ Position: Wages and Fitness Pose Major Concerns
According to LeedsLive, club officials are hesitant about re-signing Phillips due to concerns over his wage demands and recent injury issues. The midfielder is believed to be earning over £150,000 a week at Manchester City—a figure far beyond Leeds’ current wage structure, where the top earners reportedly receive around £80,000 a week.
In addition, there are doubts about his fitness. Phillips has endured a string of injuries in recent seasons, and he’s currently recovering from Achilles surgery—something Leeds see as a major risk factor.
Another logistical issue involves Premier League loan regulations. Unlike in the EFL, top-flight clubs are restricted to just two domestic loans in their squad. With Leeds expected to use those spots carefully, Phillips may not be seen as a wise use of one.
Injury Setback to Delay Any Potential Exit
Adding to the complications, Phillips is currently sidelined and is expected to miss the early part of pre-season. He recently underwent surgery on an Achilles issue and is targeting a return to full fitness sometime in August.
While he continues his rehabilitation at City’s training ground, any move—whether permanent or on loan—will likely be postponed until later in the window. A lack of pre-season involvement may also hinder his chances of fighting for a spot at City.
Phillips Spotted in Leeds Amid Transfer Buzz
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Phillips has been spotted back in Leeds, attending the Kaiser Chiefs’ homecoming concert at Temple Newsam.
A photo shared by former Leeds manager Simon Grayson showed the midfielder alongside Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas, and boxer Josh Warrington. Notably, Phillips was wearing a protective foot brace, a visible reminder of his current injury status.
City’s Midfield Plans Offer No Route Back for Phillips
Signs from the Etihad suggest that Phillips’ time at Manchester City is coming to an end. With no pre-season to impress Guardiola and fresh reinforcements being lined up, it appears that the door has closed on a return to the first-team setup.
Reports claim that City are pursuing a £55 million move for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, a deal that would push Phillips even further down the pecking order.
All signs point toward a summer departure—likely on loan, but a permanent exit hasn’t been ruled out either. While a return to Leeds would tug at the heartstrings, the financial and practical hurdles make it an unlikely outcome.
