Sheffield United could move for previous transfer target again this summer, following mysterious “farewell” letter.
A player who Chris Wilder was interested in signing for Sheffield United last summer may be available this time around after posting a cryptic social media statement that some have interpreted as a farewell message to his present club. The Blades will be active in the market again during the off-season as they seek to recover from a crushing defeat in the play-off final.
Much will be determined by the futures of several of their important players, with Gus Hamer anticipated to return, while Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic’s futures are uncertain. Some others will naturally leave the Blades as Wilder seeks to renew his team ahead of the new campaign.
Last summer, he was interested in Liverpool’s Tyler Morton, who had previously played in the Championship on loan with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. However, he remains way down the pecking order and could leave this summer, with Bayer Leverkusen being mentioned as a likely destination. Morton shares an agent with new manager Erik ten Hag, and the Germans may have plenty of cash to burn this summer if they trade Florian Wirtz to the Reds, as expected.
However, if a permanent move away from Anfield is not possible, Morton may emerge as a loan target for the Blades. At 22 years old, he is likely to believe that playing regular first-team football will benefit his long-term future more than sitting on the bench or in the stands with the Reds.
