Lee Hendrie, a pundit for Sky Sports, has expressed his support for Jack Wilshere, who remains associated with the Plymouth Argyle position.
After Johannes Hoff Thorup was dismissed, the ex-Arsenal midfielder found himself in the Norwich City dugout at season’s end. During his short stint as Carrow Road’s head coach, he secured one victory and played to a draw once.
With Norwich seemingly eyeing Liam Manning as their new manager for the 2025/26 season, Wilshere left the Norfolk-based club to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Opportunities may arise in Devon, as Wilshere has become one of the leading candidates for the Plymouth Argyle position after Miron Muslic’s exit to German giants Schalke.
The appointment of the 33-year-old, who has only a handful of games as first-team manager to his name, could be viewed as a significant gamble. Wilshere has been engaged in coaching for the past three years, leading former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie to believe he is prepared for a full-time managerial position.

Lee Hendrie, a current Sky Sports pundit, recognizes the connection between Jack Wilshere and several managerial positions since Wilshere’s departure from Norwich City, as he has been gaining experience in the dugout and in youth management for some time.
In an exclusive explanation to FLW, he stated, “He has gained some experience with the young players and has been in football clubs where he learned his craft. I believe that at times it is necessary to go out and get a feel for things.”
It is beneficial for English football to have fresh ideas and new young talent entering management.
“Many foreign managers are entering the scene who are not well-known and thus likely have less pressure on them.”
This leads Hendrie to think that taking on a player like Wilshere is a risk, but one worth taking for a team such as Plymouth.
Does it involve risk? It is clearly the case, particularly given that Plymouth have just been relegated. I am certain they will be among the favorites for promotion.
Nevertheless, I believe that Jack has put in considerable effort in the field, and this will certainly benefit him in the future. It’s a bit of a risk because he’s new and emerging, but it would be fantastic to see him take on the role.
Plymouth might need to be cautious of a Wayne Rooney repeat
Hendrie did recognize that players who have played at the highest level in England and transition almost immediately into management experience a pressure that other foreign managers do not face.
He went on, “That’s the issue.” “The Lampards, Gerrards, and Rooneys who have played at the highest level of football come with a big, bold statement that the clubs will continue to function well, but this is not always the case.”
Plymouth has recently explored hiring former top-level professional players who have transitioned to management, but this has not yielded successful results. A lot of people regard Wayne Rooney’s time as manager of the Pilgrims last season, during which he achieved only four league victories in 23 matches, as the primary factor behind their eventual relegation.
Unlike Rooney, however, Wilshere has dedicated time to developing his skills as a coach. His choice to leave Norwich entirely instead of returning to the coaching staff suggests that the former Arsenal midfielder feels prepared for this advancement.
In the 2024/25 season, Chris Davies achieved League One success in his inaugural campaign as head coach—maybe Jack Wilshere can do the same in 2025/26.
