Ryan Mason was appointed assistant to Championship rivals West Brom by the former Pompey coach.
Ryan Mason, the newly appointed West Brom manager, has hired a former Pompey coach to help him at The Hawthorns.
The 33-year-old was named head coach of the Baggies on Monday, bringing an end to the Championship club’s six-week hunt for a replacement for the fired Tony Mowbray.
It was a search that saw Blues manager John Mousinho linked with the position, which he promptly rebuffed, with West Brom hoping to attract someone who shared their football philosophy.
Despite other obvious candidates, Spurs assistant manager Mason has been selected, with the former Tottenham player signing a three-year contract with the club.
Nigel Gibbs follows Ryan Mason to the WBA.
Mason’s goal will be to return the Baggies to the Premier League after a poor ninth-place finish last season.
Nigel Gibbs, a loyal buddy who spent a brief term coaching the first team at Fratton Park, has been enlisted to assist him in this endeavour.
Indeed, the 59-year-old has been appointed WBA’s assistant head coach, quitting his position as assistant manager to former Blues striker Noel Hunt at League One Reading to take on the role.
Gibbs assisted Mason as head of player development at Spurs and served as first-team coach throughout the former midfielder’s two stints as interim manager.

Why Nigel Gibbs spent time in Pompeii
Pompey went to Gibbs for assistance with first-team matters in February 2021, after learning that then-Blues manager Kenny Jackett would be forced to temporarily step down from his duties due to medical issues.
Jackett’s old Watford teammate from the 1980s, he assisted Joe Gallen and Jake Wigley when the manager received treatment to remove a mole from his arm.
The former England under-21 international stayed on Pompey’s coaching staff until Jackett was fired as manager on March 14, 2021.
Prior to his brief tenure at Fratton Park, Gibbs was Paul Clement’s assistant coach at Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League. He had previously worked as a coach and assistant manager for Reading, Leeds, Millwall, and Swansea City.
West Brom defeated Pompey twice last season, winning 3-0 at Fratton Park in September and 5-1 at the Hawthorns in January.
