Sheffield Wednesday defender secures move after Owls future decision.

Michael Ihiekwe, a defender for Sheffield Wednesday, will join Blackpool when his contract with the Owls expires, as was previously reported.

The Tangerines were among the teams interested in signing Ihiekwe, according to a report published last week by The Star. Port Vale and Huddersfield Town were also rumored to be interested after the team decided not to offer the center defender a new deal.

However, it has now been revealed that he has made up his mind, and the 32-year-old will be joining former Owls manager Steve Bruce.

Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of center back Michael Ihiekwe,” the team said in a statement. After his contract with Sheffield Wednesday of the Sky Bet Championship expired, Ihiekwe signed a three-year contract with the Pool on July 1. The defender, who most recently played for the Owls in 2023, has an outstanding Football League resume and has received four promotions from League One.

In the meantime, “Icky” stated, “I was drawn to the Club by a variety of things. I was instantly convinced by the Club and the project here after speaking with the gaffer. My top priority has always been the Club, regardless of other interests.

“We are really pleased to have brought Michael in so early in the window, despite interest from elsewhere,” Bruce said of his new boss, expressing his satisfaction at closing the deal. With four promotions from this division already, his resume speaks for itself, and we are optimistic that his experience will help us accomplish our objectives this season.

Ihiekwe played 82 games and contributed to Hillsborough‘s historic promotion in 2022–2023, making him a well-liked figure among the team’s supporters and in the locker room.
