Oldham Athletic were welcomed home like heroes on Tuesday evening, following their dramatic National League play-off final victory that sealed their return to the Football League. Fans, staff, and players gathered at Boundary Park to celebrate a historic moment in the club’s resurgence — a moment decades in the making.
In a reception hosted by the club at the Joe Royle Stand, supporters packed the venue with flags, chants, and tears of joy. The evening was filled with laughter, emotion, and gratitude — not least from chairman Frank Rothwell, whose stewardship has transformed the Latics since his takeover in 2022.
“This club belongs to the people of Oldham,” Rothwell said, raising a glass during his speech. “We’re not just back in the Football League — we’re back with belief, with heart, and with a plan for the future.”
The event began with highlights from the play-off final — a 2-1 extra-time win over Bromley — played on big screens, prompting standing ovations and passionate cheers every time a goal or save replayed. Head coach Micky Mellon and captain Liam Hogan were among the first to take the microphone, both visibly emotional as they paid tribute to the fans and backroom staff.
“This group never gave up,” said Mellon. “We’ve had challenges, but we faced every one of them together — for this badge, for the people, and for the town.”
The night also featured a surprise musical performance from a local brass band, symbolising the club’s roots and deep ties to the community. Players mingled with fans and youth academy members, signing autographs and sharing in the celebrations that stretched well into the evening.
Rothwell, ever the charismatic presence, stole the show with an impromptu toast and a few words of wisdom.
“The secret?” he said with a grin. “There’s no secret. It’s about love — love for the club, love for the community, and love for what football can do. When people pull together, anything is possible.”
That ethos has underpinned Oldham’s revival, with Rothwell’s hands-on involvement and Mellon’s leadership bringing unity and structure to a club that had been on the brink just three years ago.
The reception ended with a fireworks display over Boundary Park, the sky above glinting in blue and white. As the team lifted a replica play-off trophy for the fans, chants of “We are going up” echoed across the car park, a poignant reminder that this victory was not just about promotion — it was about pride, identity, and a new beginning.
