‘Good memories’ but ‘right decision’ – Boro reaction to Carrick sack decision

Middlesbrough took the decision to sack Michael Carrick this week with the fanbase divided over his future prior to announcement.
Polling on Teesside Live suggested a 50/50 split on whether fans felt the club should have made the decision they ultimately did. With Carrick ultimately sacked though, it’s fair to say there was a mixture of sadness that it hadn’t worked out, but also appreciation that, with a need to move forward united, it’s probably the right decision.
Carrick leaves after two-and-a-half years at the club. In that time, he started by guiding the club to a fourth-placed finish after an excellent run. But with promotion not achieved that season, the club then failed to reach the play-offs in the next two seasons, with last term’s disappointing tenth-placed finish ultimately proving his undoing.
Naturally, there is a clamour to find out the future direction of the club and who the successor will be. That process will begin right away as they seek the replacement who will hopefully bring fresh ideas and a new approach to the club, as the ambition remains trying to earn promotion to the Premier League. Here’s a selection of reactions from supporters on social media to the Carrick sacking news.
Ian Smith: “Sad to see him leave, despite it being the correct decision for me, but there have been plenty of great memories along the way. This one is up there [Akpom’s goal against Hull City]. Happier times, when the sky really felt like the limit.”
Shaun Rye: “My overriding emotion is one of sadness. I’m disappointed that it didn’t work out for Michael as he genuinely seemed to give his all to the cause. So, who now?”
Stewart Flaherty: “Wish him well. Many good memories and many attacking players improved. Ultimately didn’t respect and wasn’t able to improve the defensive aspects of a team enough. We move on, Up the Boro.”
Mat: “Correct decision. He had no credit left with the fanbase. There was no genuine excuse for the extent of last season’s performance. I’d expect we’ve already sounded out his replacement given Woodgate & G.Carrick are also gone. Steve Cooper will be near the top of that list.”
Chris Thomas: “This was the only possible outcome if we want to be a serious club. Nice guy but aside from showcasing individual talent, which is arguably MC’s best achievement, his style of play is passive. Kieran Scott is our biggest asset and needs a say on the replacement.”
Smoggy View: “Bit gutted about this one. Think while Carrick did underachieve, he didn’t get the right time or balance. Just when he got some consistency, we sold our top striker, plus had issues with injuries. I think he will go on to way bigger things than Boro and truly wish him the best.”
UTB Jamesy: “Good decision – a defeat on the opening day and the moods toxic before the seasons started. It’s just not worked out.”
Chris Turner: “He tried to play good football but playing Leeds at home showed just how slow it was, the unwillingness to change approach for different opposition said so much, I think he’ll be good with a good set of staff around him, just wasn’t to be though, thanks MC and we move on.”
Matt Rowney: “Sad it didn’t work, but the regression was clear. Points down, goals down, 4th>8th>10th. No sign of clear issues improving (home form, defence), not an easy decision, but the right one. Now we can head into 25/26 with optimism rather than this inevitable outcome midseason.”
