Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle confesses he is “not convinced” that the club requires a sporting director at this time.
The Terriers have been interviewing potential applicants for the position since Mark Cartwright’s resignation in April.
Ross Wilson, director of football of Nottingham Forest, has been connected with a return to his previous club, but has reportedly “rejected an approach” from the Terriers, according to Football Insider.
Following Lee Grant’s appointment last week, the new manager was given the position of manager rather than head coach, implying that Town may function without a sporting director going ahead. The new manager went on to say in his first press conference that the club would not “rush” any possible candidate to the position.
Nagle told BBC Radio Leeds that the decision to have a sporting director is an internal debate.
“I’ve interviewed a number of sporting directors, and we’ve had several that we really loved, but I’m not persuaded we need one right now.
“The reality is that we have a really strong staff, and what really convinced me was that having the opportunity to speak with Lee and learn about his relationship with our guys in such a short period of time, that they’re not so far apart in terms of how they see things.
“In the end, that’s going to be their decision, and I might even ask those guys ‘do you want one or not?’, but I believe we’ll leave it up to them.
“A sporting director is a really versatile role; they can perform a variety of things. ‘Do we have the bandwidth?’ is most likely the question. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Lee, especially because he’s a first-year coach, but we’ve got some very seasoned staff that have performed effectively whether Mark Cartwright is here or not.”
