First Onuachu and Aribo, now Cyriel Dessers: Southampton flop appointed as another Super Eagles star’s coach at Rangers.
Rangers, the Scottish Premiership club, have confirmed the appointment of former Southampton coach Russell Martin as Cyriel Dessers’ club coach, according to Soccernet.ng.
Rangers parted ways with Barry Ferguson at the end of the season after the Scottish tactician failed to impress after taking over for Philippe Clement in mid-season. Ferguson was in charge of 15 games and won only six.
The Gers have appointed Scottish tactician Martin as their new coach, taking over for Ferguson.
The Scottish tactician endured a rollercoaster of an 18-month spell at Southampton. In his first season, he helped the club win promotion to the English top flight.
But he was fired six months into his second campaign after a string of poor results. Southampton eventually got relegated because they were the league’s worst team.
Will Cyriel Dessers fare better than Paul Onuachu under Russell Martin at Rangers?
Russell Martin coached two Super Eagles players, Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu, while at Southampton.
While Aribo saw a lot of playing time, Onuachu was more of a bench warmer. He didn’t get any minutes until Martin left, despite the fact that the other strikers at the club weren’t much better.
Furthermore, he did not improve either player, as Aribo was mediocre and Onuachu was given no opportunities to showcase his abilities.
Cyriel Dessers, another Super Eagles star, will now work under Martin at Rangers. It remains to be seen whether they can work well together.
Dessers is the most hated Rangers player. But he is also the best in the club. He will hope that his fortunes improve under Martin and that he can fulfil his desire to win silverware with the club.
