Charlton Athletic readying Sheffield Wednesday transfer raid for Akin Famewo

Charlton Athletic are reportedly considering a move for Sheffield Wednesday defender Akin Famewo.

The Addicks’ championship run was built on their defensive prowess.

Indeed, central defender Macaulay Gillesphey’s free-kick goal in the play-off final gave them a 1-0 lead over Leyton Orient, which they never gave up.

Nathan Jones’ side conceded less than a goal per game in 2024/25 and will need to maintain that level next season to have the best chance of staying up. The club plans to add a 26-year-old player with second-tier experience to their backline on Wednesday.

Charlton is considering a move for Akin Famewo.

Famewo is a potential summer transfer target for the London club, as reported by The Star.

The centre-back, who has already played for Charlton in two loan spells, has been offered a new contract by the Owls but has yet to decide on his future.

The Hillsborough natives also presented fresh terms to Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson. The latter is also attracting secondary and tertiary interest.

Famewo, a left-footed defender, didn’t play much last season due to injuries. He developed a thigh problem in October, which kept him out until the end of March. Charlton started 11 out of 13 league games, which is a positive sign.

As the 26-year-old enters the final month of his Wednesday contract, he is free to speak with other clubs. According to The Star, his upcoming free agent status will draw interest from clubs beyond The Valley.

Danny Rohl’s side has already lost a number of defensive options through their own actions. Ben Hamer, Ryo Hatsuse, Michael Ihiekwe, Marvin Johnson, and Pol Valentin have all been released by the club, along with attacking options Stuart Armstrong and Mallik Wilks.

The Charlton-Akin Famewo collaboration makes a lot of sense.

Famewo’s healthy performances strongly suggest that he would be a valuable addition to the Addicks. Rohl praised him when he was on the pitch, particularly before his knock around Halloween. The German manager stated, “It’s a big shame, he has been in a good way and very strong game by game,” following Famewo’s injury, as reported by The Star.

That, combined with his prior experience with the club, makes this a very viable option for Famewo to consider, especially given the current chaos at Hillsborough. Some players, coaches, and staff have yet to receive their May salaries.
