Wrexham AFC urged to beat Sheffield United to £3m Premier League “bargain” transfer

Although the 23-year-old, who rose through the ranks at Manchester City, still has a lot of suitors in the top division of English football, TeamTalk reports that two teams are expected to be interested in signing Doyle for the upcoming campaign: Sunderland and Sheffield United.

Aspiring Wrexham has also put their name in the pot as well, hoping to make an impression in their first season back in the second division since 1982. Another team mentioned in the story is a recently promoted Championship team.

Doyle may be allowed to depart for as little as £3 million, and Wolves are even eager to lose the £4.3 million they spent for him just last summer.

Liam Grice, a fan commentator for FLW’s Wrexham, is fervently hoping that his team will increase their interest in Doyle this summer if this turns out to be the case.

Regarding Wrexham’s connections to Tommy Doyle, Grice told Football League World: “Given that he is only 23 and so versatile, I believe £3 million might be considered a steal for him.

“He’s a great player who hasn’t been given an opportunity to impress at Wolves, and he’d certainly be one of our better players.”

Doyle hasn’t been able to replicate his great 2023–24 season loan stint at Molineux this season, particularly after Vitor Pereira replaced Gary O’Neil in December.

Games left out of the squad 5

Under the previous Porto manager, Doyle made just one Premier League start and was out of the game for the final nine games.

“His salary may be a bit excessive, but if we want to remain in the Championship this season, we will need to make some financial investments.

“He’s young, Championship-proven and a quality midfielder – he’d be a real step in the right direction,” Grice stated.

Tommy Doyle was a member of the Sheffield United team that won promotion to the Premier League in the 2022–2023 season prior to joining Wolves in 2023. In their run to the FA Cup semi-finals that season, Doyle made 33 appearances in the Championship and even helped score four goals, including two assists in the fourth-round 3-3 draw with Wrexham.

Doyle is being linked to Sunderland because he is clearly at least Championship caliber, if not Premier League readiness.

Grice is aware that even with Wrexham’s appeal, they probably won’t win a transfer battle with teams like Sheffield United and Sunderland at this time. But he sees this as a positive thing.

“Premier League and elite Championship teams compete with us for players, but you want to be vying with them for players instead of League One and League Two players.

“If Sheffield United and Sunderland are connected, could I expect to acquire him? Most likely unlikely, but he would be a fantastic addition.
