Christian Wade admitted he was pinching himself after a “surreal” and “humbling” first-ever appearance in rugby league – which capped a crazy few days.
Wigan Warriors’ reserves team, led by 34-year-old winger, played just over 50 minutes in Thursday night’s crushing 56-10 victory over Castleford Tigers.
Wade scored two tries in Gloucester’s 41-26 Gallagher Premiership victory over Northampton on Saturday, which was a far cry from his final Gloucester game in front of a few hundred people.
15,900 people watched that game, and Wade was rubbing his eyes in shock at being thrown into the action so quickly after joining Wigan, after experiencing rugby league for the first time at Wheldon Road.
“That was my first-ever game of rugby league, and yeah man, I enjoyed it,” Wade said to Love Rugby League.
“I am still attempting to figure out how I can get my hands on the ball more after receiving a few first and second carries.
It was enjoyable, although I’m still working on the fundamentals, like play-the-ball and comprehending the assault plans.
Nathan Lowe was playing right center on the wing next to me, and I was depending on the boys to really help guide me through the game.
“It was my first time training with Wigan, and we did it on Wednesday. It was somewhat more intense than a team run, but it was still a great experience.
“It was a very humbling experience to come and play my first game at Castleford Tigers, a fantastic club that has been there for so long. I was ecstatic about my first hit-out.
Wade made two early mistakes: he sent the ball straight into the arms of a Castleford defender after spilling a high bomb on Wigan’s 10-meter line and then intercepting on his preferred right flank.
However, as John Duffy’s reserves easily won the first half, Wade composed himself and developed into the game, delivering a lovely inside ball for Jack Farrimond to score.
Only former Wigan winger Chris Ashton has more Premiership career tries (101), with Wade’s farewell brace for Gloucester five days prior bringing his total to 93.
“Five days after playing for Gloucester last Saturday, I’m here playing against Castleford Tigers. It’s surreal, man,” Wade continued with a broad smile.
It’s incredible to think of the places I’ve been able to play with various teams and in stadiums all around the world, as well as the individuals I’ve met.
“I’m performing here in Castleford after performing in front of the Shed in Kingsholm last week. As I often say, I’m simply living in the now and doing my best.
“I want to look back on my career with pride when I’m sixty.”
Watching from the stands, Wigan manager Matt Peet may now give Wade his Super League debut against the Huddersfield Giants, which will take place at the Dewsbury Rams, on Saturday.
Wade agreed to join the Warriors on a short-term contract from June until the end of the current Super League season, according to the announcement made on Good Friday. Since Abbas Miski will be out for the next few months due to knee surgery, Wigan has had to get Wade up to speed as soon as possible.
Could he start against the Giants?
With a shoulder shrug, Wade answered, “I don’t know, man.” “I’m just here to help however I can, but I’ll be prepared if they decide it’s time to include me.
“I’m just going to work and learn as much as I can in the interim.”
