Southampton legend details what players should expect from Will Still
By Franny Benali
Saints announced Will Still as their new manager nearly two weeks ago, and while pre-season has yet to officially kick off, this month marks the beginning of an important chapter for the club. It’s the first time our players will get to work closely and consistently with Still – and first impressions, as always in football, matter a great deal.
Having spent many years both playing and observing the game, I know just how critical this early period can be, especially when a new manager arrives with fresh ideas and expectations. From everything we’ve seen and heard about Will Still, I expect him to bring a modern, progressive style of football that emphasizes high energy, tactical clarity, and strong communication.
One of the things that stands out about Still is his reputation for being highly analytical. He’s part of a new breed of managers who embrace data, video analysis, and detailed tactical planning. Players should be prepared for a training ground that’s demanding, structured, and focused on improvement in every session. There won’t be much room for complacency – and that’s exactly what this squad needs as they prepare to push for a strong Championship campaign.
Still’s age is another point of discussion, of course. At just 31, he’s younger than some managers in League One, and not much older than a few senior players in our squad. But age doesn’t necessarily equate to inexperience. He’s already managed in Ligue 1 with Reims, held leadership roles, and shown he can command a dressing room. What players should expect is a manager who’s relatable, energetic, and modern in his approach – but also fiercely competitive and unafraid to demand high standards.
There will also likely be a strong emphasis on team culture. From interviews and reports, it’s clear Still values unity, hard work, and open dialogue. That means players need to be ready to buy in completely. This isn’t a manager who’ll tolerate passengers or half-measures. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a promising academy graduate, everyone will need to earn their place and contribute to the collective effort.
It’s also worth noting how important adaptability will be. Still is known for being tactically flexible – adjusting formations and approaches based on opponents. Players need to be switched on, tactically aware, and open to learning new roles or responsibilities. That mindset will be essential if we want to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
I truly believe that Will Still’s arrival signals an exciting new era for Southampton. For the players, this is a clean slate – a chance to impress, to grow, and to be part of something building from the ground up. If they respond positively to Still’s methods and embrace the challenge, the club could be in for a real revival.
Let’s hope this new journey begins with energy, purpose, and a united squad ready to follow their manager’s lead.
