Cardiff City’s search for a new manager is coming to a close, with a significant deadline set for the next manager’s hiring.
The Bluebirds have been looking for a new manager since dismissing Omer Riza in mid-April.
Aaron Ramsey was appointed interim manager for the final two games, however the Cardiff City great could not keep the team in the Championship, and they were relegated to League One.
Michael Beale was initially the front-runner for the post in South Wales, which alarmed fans, while Cardiff considered Nathan Jones before he signed a new contract with Charlton Athletic.
Their two-month search for Riza’s replacement is virtually over, with only two candidates left to fight for the role.
Aaron Ramsey and Des Buckingham are the leading candidates for the Cardiff City post.
According to journalist Darren Witcoop, Cardiff’s search has narrowed to Ramsey and former Oxford United manager Des Buckingham.
Talks with both managers are ongoing, and Ramsey has already submitted his coaching team to the board in case he takes over, with a decision expected next week.
Cardiff are preparing for their first season in the third division in 22 years after being relegated, and they hope to return to the second tier immediately.
However, whoever they choose between Ramsey and Buckingham would have a difficult task in getting Cardiff to compete for promotion, as the club is struggling financially.
However, in order to maximise their chances of returning to the Championship, the decision is simple.
Cardiff should hire Buckingham over Ramsey.
Putting sympathy aside, Cardiff cannot afford to take risks by employing Ramsey and should do everything in their power to offer Buckingham the position.
Buckingham was fired by Oxford in December, although the 40-year-old was responsible for taking the club to the second tier after defeating Bolton Wanderers in the League One play-off final.
The Englishman has expertise navigating the third tier and would deliver Cardiff attacking football, which they have lacked in recent seasons.
Admittedly, it would not be the most inspiring appointment, but if given the choice between the two, Buckingham would win every time.
