Championship clubs must rescue ‘brilliant’ ace from League One, he’d be perfect fit for Middlesbrough

Some stellar second tier talent suffered relegation this season, and a host of Championship clubs should surely be looking at one in particular.

Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Cardiff City suffered relegation to the third tier this season, and thus will not play a part in the 25/26 Championship.

Unfortunately for the prospects next season regarding the trio, a host of second tier suitors will be hoping to capitalise on their relegation, and poach some of their most promising assets.

Last week, Miron Muslic left Plymouth for FC Schalke, and Argyle owner Simon Hallett slammed Muslic after he left in dubious circumstances, for his conduct throughout the ordeal.

Amidst the uncertainty as to who Muslic’s permanent successor will be, there is one Argyle ace that several second-tier sides should be looking to secure the services of this summer.

Championship clubs must surely look at Plymouth Argyle ace Bali Mumba

The search for Argyle’s next manager continues, and out-of-work Tom Cleverley has been the subject of interest at Home Park, but there is a hold-up in Plymouth’s pursuit of Cleverley as he holds hope of remaining in the Championship after he was controversially sacked by Watford.

Managerless Plymouth’s relegation may make it difficult for the club to retain some of their top talent, such as versatile defender Bali Mumba, throughout the summer transfer window.

23-year-old Mumba represents one of Argyle’s most valuable assets, with his transfer fee value estimated at around £2.1 million as per transfermarkt.co.uk, and the club could lose him to a second tier club this summer.

Departed Argyle boss Muric heaped praise on Mumba despite their ill-fated season, in which the former Sunderland youngster played 43 times and registered two assists.

After shining against Mumba’s former club Norwich, via the PinkUn, Muric said: “I think Bali also did it very, very well as a game changer, against Watford.

“He’s used to playing this position. He played, I think, most of the games as a left wing back. He was brilliant.”

One key aspect of Mumba’s game would make him the perfect summer signing for several Championship clubs this summer, but in particular, Middlesbrough.

Plymouth Argyle star Bali Mumba would be perfect fit for Boro

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed in May that Middlesbrough “like” Mumba, and that the club would attempt to move on full-back Luke Ayling this summer.

Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey said: “I think Middlesbrough would try and move Luke Ayling on if they could. With Dijksteel leaving, a new right-back is a massive need for them,

“One player who Middlesbrough do like is Bali Mumba. They had a look at him in January, I know they still like him. It wouldn’t surprise me if he emerges as a target once again.”

Middlesbrough’s retained list also confirmed that right-back Anfernee Dijksteel has departed the club, which would point towards Mumba being a sensible acquisition for the Teessiders.

Sunderland academy graduate Mumba is one of the most versatile players in the EFL, capable of performing well in a number of positions, namely both sides of full-back.

At only 23-years-old, Mumba possesses just shy of 150 appearances in the EFL, notching 21 combined direct goal contributions in that time.

As Argyle are, Boro are currently without a head coach after the sacking of Michael Carrick, as the search for his replacement continues.

Regardless, Boro’s recruitment team can’t afford to let slip the opportunity to sign such a talented, versatile, and promising prospect in Mumba, who is entering the final two years of his current deal at Home Park.
