Five managers who might take Kieran McKenna’s post at Ipswich Town in light of recent Brentford connections
The dominoes seem to be shifting in favor of Thomas Frank taking over in N17 following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou from Tottenham Hotspur.
That frees up a spot at Brentford, and Kieran McKenna is rumored to be the top candidate to join the Bees, putting Ipswich Town in need of a new manager.
Ipswich, one of the demoted teams going into the 2025–2026 Championship, would be the clear favorites to return, but it would be devastating to lose their manager, of course.
Michael Carrick, who lost his position at Middlesbrough last week after failing to guide the team into the 2024–2025 playoffs, is one of the biggest names to become available recently.
Carrick, who shares McKenna’s coaching philosophy, is still among the best young coaches in the game despite that setback. Carrick might be Ipswich’s man if they want to keep the ship stable, as both managers use a 4-2-3-1 style.
Sean Dyche, who hasn’t had a job since January, has been considered for many of the Championship positions that have come up recently. Dyche is rumored to be interested in the Leicester position, although it is still unfilled.
Dyche would have a similar opportunity to take over one of the parachute payment clubs with the Ipswich position, but Leicester wouldn’t have to worry about potential point deductions.
The main issue is that Dyche would force Ipswich to adopt a more inflexible 4-4-2 formation. Although that might not be a negative thing in and of itself, the club’s players would have to make some adjustments.
Francesco Farioli is another man who has recently been connected to a number of positions, including that one at Leicester City. The 36-year-old may be interested in moving to England, as he has been previously listed as a target for Sunderland.
After missing out on the Eredivisie title by one point to PSV, Farioli left Ajax last month. He would bring a more attacking 4-3-3 shape and a wealth of European experience if he were to take charge at Ipswich.
Not very long ago, it appeared that Steven Gerrard might return to the Rangers, but Russell Martin was hired instead. Gerrard is still looking for work as a result, and we know he is eager to return to England if at all feasible.
Gerrard, like McKenna, prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation and expects his players to work hard and attack. Although many neutrals prefer to point up Gerrard’s inadequacies at Aston Villa, it’s important to keep in mind that he accomplished a lot with Rangers in Scotland.
One man who is currently employed and would be a perfect fit for Ipswich Town is Richie Wellens. Having played on loan at Portman Road, he is well-known to the team, and his work at Leyton Orient has demonstrated that he is an excellent manager.
Once more, his style of play complements what Ipswich is already doing, he has strong contacts in the game that may help him get beneficial loan agreements and moves, and he is a superb man-manager who may be able to assist the Ipswich team recover from relegation.
Ipswich Town was the clear winner when we asked neutrals to estimate which relegated team will be promoted in 2025–2026. That was largely due to the club’s ability to maintain stability under McKenna’s leadership into the upcoming season.
If you take that away, the club and their chances of being promoted might fall apart. Maintaining the core group of players, obviously without Liam Delap, is one thing, but McKenna is the thread that ties everything together.
Without a sure, losing McKenna would be a huge setback for the Tractor Boys, but any of the aforementioned names may assist keep that balance and carry on with the project reasonably smoothly.
