The Royals should relocate downtown, according to KC’s new city manager, and he knows exactly where to put them.
If Missouri lawmakers adopt a stadium incentive scheme to help make it happen, Kansas City’s new city manager says he has no doubts about where the Royals should build their new ballpark.
Mario Vasquez stated, “My personal preference is obviously for downtown… for baseball to go to the Washington Square Park site, which I think is well suited for it.”
Since the unsuccessful stadium sales tax election in April 2024, Mayor Quinton Lucas and others have been advocating for Washington Square Park since late last summer.
Since then, there have been reports that the team would relocate across the state line to Overland Park, where the former Sprint campus is now held by Aspiria. Clay County is still a contender.
Washington Square Park has long been Vasquez’s favorite. He also has a new and prominent platform as the city’s top administrator, which he used to argue for that location and express his preferences in a recent in-depth interview with The Star in his new office on the 29th floor of City Hall.
