After a Fulham player nearly single-handedly pulled Wales back on track, Belgium won a seven-goal thriller on Tottenham legend Jan Vertonghen’s farewell.
With less than 30 minutes of play, Wales, led by former West Ham star Craig Bellamy, had a dismal start to the match and were already behind 3-0.
Romelu Lukaku, Youri Tielemans, and Jeremy Doku, a flamboyant Premier League trio from the past and present, appeared to have put the visitors to the sword.
However, Harry Wilson led Wales’s recovery. Shortly before halftime, he scored a penalty to raise his team’s spirits.
He then set up Sorba Thomas six minutes after the restart, using a brilliant crossfield delivery to sneak the Huddersfield player into the danger area.
And when the Cottager set up Brennan Johnson, the hero of Tottenham Hotspur’s Bilbao, with a far-post center for Thomas, who then headed back across the face of goal, it appeared as though Rudi Garcia’s Belgium had completely fallen apart.
However, it was not to be, and with two minutes remaining at the far stick, Napoli-to-be superstar De Bruyne finished Koni de Winter’s delivery with a flourish just as it appeared that the two nations had settled for a point in this thrilling match. Belgium now controls their own destiny as a result of this historic triumph.
