Exclusive: What Sky Sports pundit has said on Plymouth Argyle appointing Tom Cleverley

Lee Hendrie has claimed that Tom Cleverley would be a great appointment at Plymouth Argyle following his Watford exit.

Anthony Joseph reported earlier this month that the 35-year-old is one of four guys in the running to take charge at Home Park next season. Cleverley spent last season in charge of his previous club Watford, taking them to 14th position before being let go. Plymouth will be looking for someone capable of leading the club back to the Championship next season, after finishing 23rd in the standings under Miron Muslic.

Tom Cleverley appointment claim

Hendrie feels Cleverley could have continued to take Watford forward if he had not been fired at the end of the season. He believes that taking over at Plymouth would be a step back, but that bringing him on board would be a huge coup for the Devon outfit. “I do think he would be a good appointment,” Hendrie told Football League World exclusively.

“I just think Tom’s had that experience this season being around the Watford club, which was a decent squad, and I think he had a good season. “I believe he could have gone on to achieve more at Watford. “But I think that 100 per cent that, if Plymouth are linked with him and he does take that job, it’s obviously a step down but it would be a great coup for the football club.”

Tom Cleverley’s Watford record

Cleverley lasted one full season in command of Watford before being fired in May. During his tenure, he oversaw 58 games, and the team won 20 of them.

Despite many predictions that they would be relegated before the season began, the Hornets finished 14th. Cleverley is apparently one of four names being interviewed for the role at Plymouth, alongside Jack Wilshere, Ian Evatt, and Des Buckingham, however Evatt is no longer being considered.

Cleverley appointment could be promising for Plymouth

Cleverley did an adequate job at Watford last season, bringing them up to a decent standard despite low expectations. His expulsion was severe, but that is to be anticipated from the Hornets, therefore bringing him to Plymouth could be a brilliant move. Bringing in a new manager is always risky, but Cleverley proved he can teach at the Championship level last year. On that basis, he could be the appropriate choice to help them compete for League One promotion in the following season.
