Ex-Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder bombshell after Sunderland Wembley defeat

Wilder, 57, was only given a new three-year deal at Bramall Lane in January, but his future is now uncertain.

It follows Sheffield United’s play-off final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium last month, which leaves the Blades preparing for their second season in the Championship.

According to reports, United’s seven-person board is now discussing on Wilder’s future, and the former Boro boss has yet to get confirmation of the club’s decision.
There are reported to be disagreements in the boardroom about whether Wilder is the right option to take Sheffield United forward following their play-off final defeat. Recruitment is said to be one source of conflict.

After Sheffield United’s defeat at Wembley Stadium, with Sunderland’s Tommy Watson scoring the winner in stoppage time, Wilder said: “We’ve had a taste of the Premier League; we know what a terrific experience it is and what they’ll have next season.

“It’s going to take quite a while to get over this and we’re going to have to suffer and go through the pain.”

If Wilder leaves, Sheffield United will join Boro, Bristol City, and QPR in hunting for a new head coach.

Leicester City’s future remains uncertain, with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s status being unknown.
