Keep, sell or loan? Grading the Southampton squad for the summer transfer window.

Southampton are preparing for a fresh start under new manager Will Still, whose appointment has sparked optimism ahead of the 2025-26 season. The English strategist will strive to take the Saints back to the Premier League.

During the summer transfer window, his squad will undoubtedly undergo numerous changes. Both ins and outs can be expected, with veteran players regressing and top talent possibly looking to stay in the English top flight. Here, we evaluate Still’s team and run the rule over their short-term prospects. Some will be allowed to stay at St Mary’s, while others will be placed on loan to gain valuable experience, and still others will be shown the permanent departure door.

Grading Southampton’s Squad

Aaron Ramsdale (sell) After being relegated for the third time, Aaron Ramsdale is unlikely to stay at Southampton. His contract has a £25 million release clause, which has become activated as the Saints have dropped to the Championship. Gavin Bazunu (Loan The Irish custodian is expected to want to replace Ramsdale, but he has yet to demonstrate the necessary qualifications. A loan spell at Belgian club Standard Liege was deemed a “disaster,” but another move to an EFL League One club could be beneficial. Joe Lumley (contract Expires) The legendary English shot-stopper will leave when his contract expires on June 30.

Alex McCarthy (Keep)

Alex McCarthy only signed a new two-year contract with the club last summer, and it appears like he will stay for the remainder of the year. The 35-year-old may serve as the third-choice custodian and brings considerable expertise.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Keep)

Taylor Harwood-Bellis was bound to be among the names mentioned in the gossip mill following relegation. According to reports, West Ham United have been keeping an eye on the young English defender, but the Saints should do everything possible to keep him. Jan Bednarek (sell) Since joining the club in the summer of 2017, the Polish centre-back has performed admirably. But Still needs to oversee a rebuild, which involves unloading those in their thirties and later stages of their careers. He also reportedly earns £70,000 every week, making him the club’s joint second highest earner.

Armel Bella-Kotchap (Sell)

The French-born German defender was on loan at PSV Eindhoven last season before suffering an injury that ended his stint there. But he wants to return to the Bundesliga, and a permanent exit is best for everyone involved. Nathan Wood (Keep Southampton spent £3 million to recruit Nathan Wood to the South Coast last summer. The 23-year-old has had a poor start, but he still has potential to improve and might benefit from more consistent playing time in the Championship.

Jack Stephens (Keep)

Jack Stephens’ future is uncertain, and Still may be inclined to put his foot down and usher in a new age. However, his leadership skills could be useful in the Championship, and he has already hinted at staying. Joachim Kayi Sanda (Keep) The French teenager, who joined in January, has great promise. He could be one to watch under Still, who understands how to get the most out of young players. Juan Larios (sell) If Southampton receive a reasonable amount for the 21-year-old, it may be beneficial to cash in. Sevilla have apparently been watching him since his move from Manchester City.

Ryan Manning (keep) The Irish left-back intends to stay and help the club return to the Premier League next season. The 28-year-old’s experience and some standout performances last season should ensure he stays at St Mary’s. Welington (Keep) The Brazilian officially joined in January after agreeing to transfer in the summer of 2024. He only made 10 league games, but his performances suggest he may be important under Still. Charles Taylor (Sell) Charlie Taylor has had a rough tenure at St Mary’s since signing from Burnley, which began under former manager Russell Martin. The left-back has struggled to obtain consistent game time, and he may be released.

Kyle Walker-Peter (Contract Expires)

The English full-back is set to depart when his contract expires on June 30.

Joe Aribo (Sell)

There has already been speculation of Joe Aribo reuniting with former Rangers manager Russell Martin, and a decent deal may assist Still rebuild the team. According to the Turkish source Sabah, Trabzonspor is interested in the Nigerian player. Shea Charles (Keep The Northern Irish midfielder’s loan stay at Sheffield Wednesday was a success, but it has also drawn a lot of attention to him. Leeds United are renowned admirers and could swoop, but he’s a young talent that Still could build around.
