Highly-rated defender ‘on the verge’ of joining Celtic, could sign this weekend

Celtic is aiming to sign players for immediate usage next season, but the club is also making long-term acquisitions.

Brendan Rodgers is creating a club that can battle on four fronts next season and beyond, with Kieran Tierney already signed and Ross Doohan and Callum Osmand on their way.

Indeed, the Greenock Telegraph reports that 17-year-old defender Isaac English is ‘on the verge’ of signing for Celtic, with the centre-back set to relocate from Greenock to Glasgow as early as Friday.

According to the source, the two sides have agreed on a £50,000 cost, with English having only one year left on his present contract with the Greenock-based club.

The young defender was a key player of Morton’s under-18s team, which recently won the Club Academy Scotland Performance League and advanced to the CAS Cup final.

English was chosen to Greenock Morton’s first-team substitutes’ bench for their Championship encounter against Scott Brown’s Ayr United in March, but he has yet to make his senior debut in his short career.

In other news, Celtic are trying to sign FC Nordsjaelland attacker Benjamin Nygren from the Danish club after being ‘given permission’ by his club to begin talks with the player.

The Swenen international, who made his debut for his country earlier this year, scored 16 goals for Nordsjaelland last season, enjoying a breakout personal season after previously playing for IFK Goteborg and Genk, as well as a loan spell at Dutch club Heerenveen.

It is expected that £1.7 million will be sufficient to purchase the versatile midfielder, given Nygren’s contract expires at the end of the year. Both parties are still talking.
