Frank Rothwell to become OBE in King’s Birthday Honours List 2025
Frank Rothwell, the charismatic owner of Oldham Athletic Football Club, has been named in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025 and will be awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding services to charity and dementia research.
Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, boundless energy, and warm sense of humour, Rothwell has been widely praised for his tireless work as a philanthropist and fundraiser. The honour, announced today (June 13), recognises not just his business acumen and leadership at Boundary Park, but his significant contributions to medical research and community causes.
Rothwell, who took control of Oldham Athletic in 2022, has overseen a remarkable period of revitalisation for the club, bringing stability and optimism back to the fanbase. However, it is his work away from the football pitch that has earned him national recognition.
In recent years, Rothwell has raised millions of pounds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, inspired in part by his personal connection to the cause. In 2020, at the age of 70, he became the oldest man to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, completing the incredible 3,000-mile journey in 56 days as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. His efforts raised more than £1 million for the dementia charity and captured the hearts of the public.
Speaking about the OBE honour, Rothwell said:
“I am truly humbled and honoured to receive this recognition. Everything I’ve done has been about giving back, helping others, and making a difference where I can. I’ve been fortunate in life, and I believe it’s important to use that good fortune for good.”
Rothwell’s charitable work continues through his ongoing support of local initiatives across Oldham and Greater Manchester. Whether helping fund community centres, sponsoring educational programmes, or championing causes linked to mental health and elderly care, he has built a legacy rooted in compassion and action.
Beyond his fundraising efforts, Rothwell has also nurtured a deep connection with his local community. He frequently attends Oldham matches, mingling with fans and reinforcing his reputation as a hands-on, approachable club owner. His leadership has helped restore trust between the club and its supporters after years of turmoil prior to his takeover.
Adding to his many talents, Rothwell is also a passionate vintage car enthusiast. He famously built a working replica of a classic Rothwell’s car—an homage to a vehicle once manufactured in Oldham until 1919. The car was a highlight at local exhibitions and a symbol of his pride in the town’s heritage.
The King’s Birthday Honours List celebrates those who have made exceptional contributions to British society, and Rothwell’s inclusion underscores the national admiration for his selfless efforts. His story is one of determination, community spirit, and unwavering generosity.
Oldham Athletic fans and the wider public alike will no doubt share in celebrating Rothwell’s achievement—a fitting honour for a man who continues to inspire by example.
