Sky Sports pundit will have just annoyed so many Birmingham City fans with his latest comments.

Birmingham City are back in the Championship after a fantastic 2024/25 season, but they are still a division below their closest rivals.

Birmingham City has already made deals this summer, and much more work is likely to be done when the transfer window reopens next week. The Blues have recently been connected with former winger Demarai Grey, while the Kwame Poku trade issue drags on. Birmingham has received a favourable Championship prediction ahead of the 2025/26 season. If they make their long-awaited return to the top tier of English football, they will face old rivals Aston Villa.

Pundit explains why Aston Villa are bigger than Birmingham City

Birmingham believe they will be promoted to the Premier League next year, which means a derby might take place shortly. Despite Villa’s rivalry with the Blues, Birmingham have been connected with Louie Barry. Given the two clubs’ histories, it would be an intriguing move, and one Sky Sports commentator has recently spoken about the Midlands combination. Football League World has questioned Lee Hendrie which club is bigger between Aston Villa and Birmingham. And he believes there is ‘no doubt’ that it is Unai Emery’s team, regardless of who owns the Blues.

He stated: “There is no doubt who is the biggest football team. I don’t care who owns Birmingham City or who is engaged with their club; Aston Villa has been the biggest club in the Midlands for a long time and will continue to be the biggest club in the Midlands, regardless of who takes control of Birmingham City.”

What Tom Wagner has said about Aston Villa

Birmingham’s owner, Tom Wagner, has commented about Aston Villa and their rivalry. When doing so, he stated that his club’s ‘primary ambition’ was to return to the first division and compete with Villa. Wagner stated, “It’s definitely a top priority. It’s the proper rivalry for Birmingham, the right derby for English football, and the best way for each team to reach its full potential is to reignite a long-dormant rivalry. “When I speak to the true fans on both sides of that rivalry, I get the same reaction, which is that they’d love to see it.”
