Craig Gordon: Hearts & Scotland keeper eyes ‘perfect ending’ at World Cup but admits this season could be his last.

The 42-year-old is entering his 24th season of senior football; he has 330 appearances for Hearts and 81 Scotland caps; the Tynecastle Park team will face Gordon’s former club Sunderland in his testimonial match on July 26.

As Hearts and Scotland custodian Craig Gordon prepares for his testimonial against Sunderland, the 42-year-old acknowledges the upcoming season could be his last, discussing his ‘ideal finish’ with club and country. Craig Gordon is preparing for his 24th season in professional football, and he is considering how he wants to retire with Hearts and Scotland.

The experienced custodian, who will be 43 in December, has signed on for another year at Tynecastle Park, hoping to assist his club improve on a poor season.

“Obviously, that’s what happens at the end of the season.” We are all aware that the World Cup is present. “We need to do exceptionally well in the six games to ensure that we are there and not in a play-off. “Winning the group isn’t impossible. I believe there will be at least two additional teams who believe they can win that group. It’s on the horizon. “We get that little bit of luck and we can go on and do something special.”‘

Hearts will face newly promoted Premier League side Sunderland on July 26 to celebrate Gordon’s testimonial year ahead of what he believes to be his final season at Tynecastle Park. “I believe this is similar to the previous year at this time. “You never know,” the former Black Cats custodian said. “I would never write it off completely. I just want to get my body in the best shape for the season and play as many games as I can. Who knows? If all goes well, it may not be the end. “At this point, I’m taking it one week at a time. Making sure I’m staying fit and able to play games.”

Gordon is also prepared to play for the Gorgie club’s 12th permanent manager, Derek McInnes, who replaced Neil Critchley last month. Gordon is looking forward to working with the former Killie boss.

“His teams that I’ve always played against have been really difficult to play against,” stated the former Celtic captain. “Always give you a difficult game. If he brings that to us, I think it will be a fantastic asset. “I know he’s already spoken with a lot of the players, and everyone has expressed their enthusiasm and readiness to get started. “He’s already given the place a boost just by conversing with the guys on the phone. “I think everybody’s excited and looking forward to getting in, getting started and getting down to work and getting ready for the start of the season.”
