Potential Chris Wilder suitor emerges as Sheffield United eye sacked Championship manager

Sheffield United could turn to a recently unemployed Championship man to take over from Chris Wilder in the upcoming season.

Following the disappointment of missing out on promotion to the Premier League, Sheffield United could part ways with Chris Wilder.

It is a clear sign of ambition from the new owners who believe that a third-place finish is potentially not sufficient, but it could stir up discontent in the Sheffield United circle.

Alan Biggs has criticised what could potentially be a wrong decision for Sheffield United in his opinion, but such a bold call surely rests on who the successor would be for Wilder.

Two names have emerged as potential options for Sheffield United, one of which was only recently sacked after narrowly missing out on relegation to League One.

Former Hull City boss Ruben Selles named as a contender to replace Chris Wilder at Sheffield United

One name that has been linked with a move to Bramall Lane is former Hull City boss Ruben Selles, who, per The Sun, is a contender to take over from Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder.

The Portuguese man was brought in to save Hull City midway through the 2024/25 Championship season and he even conducted an unexpected 3-0 win away at Bramall Lane with the Tigers. He would go on to keep Hull up on the final day, but was still relieved of his duties following the conclusion of the season.

Sheffield United have also been linked with former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil to potentially take over from Chris Wilder if he is dismissed from his role.

Blades owners should give Chris Wilder the benefit of the doubt ahead of next season

Of course, Sheffield United did fall at the final hurdle in the Championship play-off final, losing out to Sunderland at Wembley, but that shouldn’t be the reason behind Wilder being dismissed from his role.

Having to compete with other teams with larger budgets, Sheffield United, although they missed out, did still exceed expectations last season. The Blades could have easily gone down a similar trajectory as Luton Town did, considering their poor form in the Premier League, but Wilder galvanised the troops to record what was a successful Championship season.

Football certainly has no loyalty, but the new Blades owners shouldn’t be moving so quickly to look elsewhere for managers, especially when the options to replace Wilder are so limited.
