Why Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea transfer agreement is on hold despite deal being “done”

The reasons for the delayed announcement of Bolton Wanderers’ deal to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe on loan have been revealed.

Bolton have gotten off to a fast start this summer as Steven Schumacher attempts to solve the challenges he faced in the later stages of the 2024/25 season. Sam Dalby, an attacking midfielder, Xavier Simons, a future prospect, Charlie Warren, and a new central defender, Richard Taylor, have all joined the team.

Sharman-Lowe will be their next addition. The Chelsea kid was Doncaster Rovers’ primary goalkeeper last season when they won League Two.

FLW exclusively revealed in early May that the Trotters were interested in signing Sharman-Lowe for the 2025-26 season, and it has now been reported that Bolton have agreed to a loan agreement for the 22-year-old – but any confirmation has been put on hold.

Sharman-Lowe is currently representing England at the Euro under-21 competition in Slovakia. He has been on the bench for England’s first two games of the campaign, in which they have collected four points.

Reasons behind delayed Bolton, Sharman-Lowe announcement revealed

According to the Bolton News, an official announcement of the six-foot-four goalkeeper’s move to the Toughsheet Community Stadium has been postponed due to the summer tournament and his parent club’s participation in the Club World Cup in the United States.

He wasn’t the only goalkeeper Bolton was considering; a few weeks after Sharman-Lowe’s interest was disclosed, Crystal Palace stopper Owen Goodman was also on the radar after a remarkable season with AFC Wimbledon in League Two.

Football League World exclusively reported over a week ago that Huddersfield Town were interested in the 21-year-old, and The Athletic has since claimed that the Terriers are set to win that race, forcing Wanderers to turn to Sharman-Lowe as their next-best option.

Bringing in defensive reinforcements is a must for Bolton Wanderers this summer after leaky 2024-25

The next step in Schumacher’s plan to get Bolton back in the promotion race is to address the Trotters’ defensive flaws.

They conceded the second-most goals among clubs finishing in the top half of the standings (70). Twelve of those goals were scored in the last five games of the season.

Schumacher is aiming to bring Championship experience to his backline with the signing of Hull City left-back Matty Jacob.

The 24-year-old is still under contract at the MKM Stadium and is being tracked by Reading, according to Hull Live, as well as Swiss clubs.

These investments in stabilizing at the back might pay off if players like Sharman-Lowe can reach League One.
