The Championship managerial merry-go-round is set to spin again, with two men with strong Middlesbrough connections reportedly involved. Sheffield United are thought to be close to making a decision over the future of Chris Wilder – and have an ex-Boro star lined up as his replacement.

 

News emerged last week that former Boro boss Wilder’s time at Bramall Lane could be about to end for the second time, with new owners seemingly wanting to go in a different direction.

 

And The Sun report they will turn to Gary O’Neil to replace Wilder should they decide to make the change. O’Neil, who played 120 times for Middlesbrough in four seasons on Teesside, has managed at Bournemouth and Wolves, but has been looking for his next role since leaving Molineux last season.

 

He had been linked with the vacant Boro job, but could be charged with leading Sheffield United’s promotion push next season.

 

Hull target striker

Staying with the Blades, Hull City could make former Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie their No 1 transfer target this summer. The Tigers are looking for a new focal point of their forward line under manager Sergej Jakirovic.

 

McBurnie has decided to move on from Spanish outfit Las Palmas, with the Scotland striker keen to return to the UK. He could be in line for a Bramall Lane return should Wilder stay, but Hull Live report that City also keen on the 29-year-old.

 

Dibling wanted by Euro giants

Southampton’s Tyler Dibling could be one of the most in-demand players in the Championship this coming season . . . if he stays with the Saints. The 19-year-old has already been watched by a host of clubs, including Boro’s North East rivals Newcastle United.

 

However, Portuguese giants Porto are said to be ready to make a move for Dibling this summer, with a significant bid in the pipeline. Southampton had suggested they wanted £100m for the England U21 international, but that pricetag is likely to have come down considerably following relegation to the Championship.
