QPR and Preston North End dealt transfer boost as Charlton Athletic target ‘desperate’ for move.

Reading might lose an in-demand defender on a free transfer this summer, with Championship clubs hovering. QPR and Charlton Athletic have received a boost in their pursuit of in-demand Reading defender Amadou Mbengue, with the League One club’s manager allowing an open discussion about contract circumstances.

Preston North End and Watford are also reportedly interested in the Royals’ centre-back, and there is plenty of Championship interest. Mbengue had an impressive season for the Royals last time out, but the Berkshire club narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs and the opportunity to compete for promotion. Mbengue, a Metz academy product, made 37 appearances for Reading in all competitions last season. He joined Reading in September 2022 and made 26 Championship games before the club was relegated to League One.
Reading CEO drops QPR and Charlton Athletic transfer hint
The player is out of contract this summer, and Reading co-CEO Joe Jacobson has provided an update on the club’s contracts. Mbengue has been offered a new contract but has not yet signed it. Jacobson told the Reading Chronicle, “Everyone we intended to keep will stay, within reason. We may not be able to retain everyone due to how well some performed, but we are trying. “We would like to keep everyone we’ve offered contracts to. It may not happen, but that’s football. We want to bring in some really good and exciting guys. Mbengue has gotten frequent acclaim for his character in addition to his athletic ability on the pitch. The defender watched his team’s match against Stevenage with fans in the stands this season and has become a fan favourite.
Charlton Athletic move for Australian rising starMbengue is not the only player under consideration by Charlton Athletic following their promotion to the Championship. Nathan Jones is trying to add second-tier experience to his squad while still keeping an eye on the future. According to transfer specialist Alan Nixon, the Addicks are interested in signing 17-year-old Australian custodian Sonny Inzalaco. The Perth Red Star player is a future prospect, but he is reportedly ‘desperate’ to relocate to the United Kingdom. The shot-stopper has a British passport, which could aid with the move. Little is known about the financial terms of any potential transition.
