The American owners of Sheffield United have decided to fire Chris Wilder and bring in Rubén Sellés, potentially upsetting the team’s supporters.
The club is believed to have started advanced talks with Sellés, who was fired by Hull last month, with news of Wilder’s exit anticipated soon. After being hired in December of last year, the Spaniard barely maintained Hull in the Championship.
The decision by COH Sports, the partnership that owns Sheffield United, to terminate Wilder’s second stint as manager is reportedly causing him great distress. He was under contract until 2028, and it seems that compensation negotiations are the reason for the postponement of his departure announcement.
The Blades were docked two points at the beginning of the previous season for financial irregularities, but they were still in a great position to win automatic promotion right up to the very end, when they lost to Sunderland 2-1 in the playoff final.
Wilder is believed to have disagreed with the owners’ enthusiasm for a heavily data-driven player recruitment system, despite the fact that a large portion
of the fan base seemed to support keeping the 57-year-old manager, who during his first stint led the Blades from League One to the Premier League in consecutive seasons.
After purchasing Prince Abdullah in December of last year, COH Sports took over, and by the end of January, they were so pleased with Wilder that they extended his contract by three years.
After beginning his coaching career as Valencia University’s first team manager, Sellés had brief stints as Southampton’s and Reading’s manager.
Since coming to England, Sellés has gained a lot of supporters despite his inconsistent coaching record and is regarded as a talented young player developer.
