Lee Grant is pleased by the potential of new loan player Josh Feeney, who Huddersfield Town signed from Aston Villa for next season. The Terriers have confirmed their sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with the 20-year-old centre-back joining on a season-long loan. Feeney spent last season on loan at Shrewsbury Town in League One, and he will return to the level next season with different expectations.
He made 37 league games for Salop last season as they were demoted from the third division, but Huddersfield sees a player ready to step up and challenge for a spot in a team with promotion aspirations.
The England youth international joined Villa’s academy from Fleetwood Town in 2021, making 50 appearances for their U23 side and appearing on the bench for the senior club in the Premier League. After demonstrating his ability to handle the rigours of League One football at Shrewsbury, new Huddersfield manager Grant is looking forward to bringing in a young, high-potential talent to supplement the experience they have acquired elsewhere. Grant said: “I am happy to welcome Josh to Huddersfield Town, where he will strengthen our defensive unit ahead of the 2025/26 season.
“Josh is a young, talented defender who has a season of experience playing in this division, demonstrating his ability to deal with the demands of a demanding schedule, and is ready and capable of taking the next step up as another addition to our back line.
“We are excited by the potential in Josh this season, and we know that he’s motivated in helping Huddersfield Town and the team towards our goals.
“I would like to thank Aston Villa for their trust in assisting the development of one of their bright young talents, and we look forward to working with Josh as we head into pre-season.”
Working for a younger head coach like Grant, who has fresh ideas, seems to be an exciting prospect for players, and the prospect of playing for one of the bigger clubs in the league feels like a step up for Feeney.
As a young centre-back, mastering the art of defending is his main aim, but in a team that will aim to dominate possession and take the game to their opposition, he is ready for his abilities in possession to also be tested.
Feeney added: “I am thrilled to join Huddersfield Town for the season, a club that has a positive feeling around it and ambition, in Sky Bet League One.
“After speaking with manager Lee Grant, I knew this was the best decision for me to continue my career. He has clear principles and goals, which I can truly get behind. “The goals are clear, and I can’t wait to help the team this season, perhaps providing the fans some good memories along the way. “I am a defender first and foremost, and I do not want to concede any goals. I’m good with the ball. I enjoy having it at my feet, trying to get assists and goals.”
