Following the departure of Chris Wilder, Sheffield United did not spend any time in selecting their new manager.
The announcement of Wilder’s departure and the confirmation of Ruben Selles as his successor happened in a just forty-five minutes.
Only a few weeks after leaving his position at Hull City, Selles comes. On the last day, the Spaniard managed to keep the Tigers in the Championship, but it wasn’t enough to keep him employed.
Selles, who has coached in Denmark, Azerbaijan, and his native Spain, is taking on his fourth position in English football. Prior to his time at Hull, he spent the better part of 18 months at Reading and a few months at Southampton in the 2022–2023 season, where he was unable to keep them in the Premier League.
“When we first heard about the possibility of coming here, it was a no brainer for us to join a club with this kind of history and with a mission to move forward and try to be even more competitive,” Selles told the club’s media.
“This project is incredibly ambitious and potent. Getting everyone on the same page at the beginning of the conversations was crucial.
“We must embrace statistics and new technologies, but we must never lose sight of the fundamentals of football. Using all of the resources at our disposal, I believe we can maximise our performance and produce a quality model.
“Our identity is always very clear,” he added. We want to be forceful and force things to happen. Fans should therefore anticipate a team that will not wait or be reactive; rather, we will take the initiative and go out and strive to be as competitive as we can in each and every game. We’ll have a great chance of winning games if we can accomplish that.”
Under Wilder, Sheffield United attempted to immediately return to the top level last season, finishing third in the Championship. They lost to Sunderland in the final because of a late goal from Tommy Watson, but they defeated Bristol City in their play-off semifinal.
“To the fans, I’m obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League,” he stated. “I’m a Sheffield native at heart, and I will always treasure this city and this team.
“I leave with a few treasured memories and am honoured to be remembered in the same way as legendary Sheffield United managers—leading this squad more than 300 times will always be an amazing part of my life. I want to sincerely thank you for all of your help.
