Cornick features: 3 strikers Charlton Athletic & Nathan Jones could consider moves for this summer

Cornick features: 3 strikers Charlton Athletic & Nathan Jones could consider moves for this summer.

Charlton Athletic will be a Championship club for the first time since 2020 during the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.

Charlton last averted relegation from the Championship in 2015, so they must get things right during the summer transfer window if they are to re-establish themselves at that level next season. The Addicks beat Derby County to the signing of midfielder Sonny Carey on a free transfer from Blackpool earlier this summer, and they offered roughly £1.3 million for Leyton Orient’s Ethan Galbraith, so fans should be hopeful that the club can complete some major business before August. Charlton will need to reinforce up front this summer, since Matty Godden is the only striker in the squad with Championship experience.

Chuks Aneke has been released, Gassan Ahadme has failed to impress since his arrival last summer, and Micah Mbick and Daniel Kanu are unlikely to be ready for Championship football at this point, implying that Jones could benefit from another out-and-out striker to join Godden, Miles Leaburn, and Tyreece Campbell. Charlton were relegated to League One in 2020 after Lyle Taylor and Macauley Bonne scored 11 goals each in the Championship, so they will understand the importance of finding a regular striker if they are to be successful next season.

Godden’s ability and experience will be invaluable to the Addicks, but he only scored six goals in 35 appearances for Coventry the last time he played in the second tier, so let’s look at three strikers Charlton should consider signing this summer to ensure they have enough quality in the final third.

Dane Scarlett

Nathan Jones prefers to buy players permanently rather than on loan, but Dane Scarlett could be a wise temporary acquisition from Tottenham Hotspur. The 21-year-old scored four goals in 20 Championship outings for Oxford United last season, a respectable return given that he only made seven starts in the league. He was recalled by Spurs in January and scored three goals in five Premier League and Europa League games during the second half of the season. Scarlett has had three loan spells away from Tottenham, so he could have the necessary experience to show why he is so highly rated and make a serious impact in the Championship next season, especially if he is able to stay close to home in London.

Harry Cornick

It wouldn’t be a Charlton transfer window without some talk about whether the Welshman will sign a player with whom he previously worked at Luton Town. Between 2019 and 2022, Bristol City forward Harry Cornick scored 22 goals and assisted 16 in the Championship for the Hatters, with some of his best performances coming while Jones was in the dugout at Kenilworth. The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour at Ashton Gate, and with only one year remaining on his contract, a reunion at The Valley might be beneficial for both Cornick and Jones.

Malik Mothersille

London Road

Malik Mothersille, a Croydon native, scored 12 goals and helped nine for Peterborough United in League One last season, helping them finish 18th in the table. The Jamaica international demonstrated to Charlton his abilities by scoring both at home and away against the Addicks for Darren Ferguson’s side in the 2024/25 season.

Football League World can exclusively reveal that the Addicks are keen in signing the 21-year-old this summer, while Queens Park Rangers are also intrigued. Peterborough has a history of demanding high transfer fees for their main assets, but Charlton’s bid for Galbraith indicates that they have some money to spend, and the prospect of returning to the capital to play Championship football could be appealing to Mothersille, who has only one year left on his contract at the Weston Homes Stadium.
