Sheffield Wednesday are under embargo and a three-window fee restriction at present with regards to the non-payment of their players.
It is known that, at the time of writing, several Owls players are still owed salaries for the month of May, with only a few receiving payment after a lengthy delay.
The latest financial disaster saw Wednesday embargoed until all debts were fulfilled, with the restriction resulting from their breaking the English Football League’s 30-day regulation.
While under embargo, the club is limited in terms of how many players it can sign, only being able to’staff up’ to 23 ‘permitted players’, and the fee limitation means that they will not be able to sign anyone in any transactions that require payment until January 2027.

Now it has been discovered that there is another thing to consider: the type of earnings they can offer. We already know that while under embargo, the Owls are unable to offer contracts of more than a year or sign loan players for more than half a season, but it is also claimed that there is a limit on how much they may pay new arrivals.
While the EFL will not confirm the price, and things can be considered on an individual basis, The Star understands it to be roughly £7,000 per week. That sum would further limit the types of players the Owls can recruit.
What this implies for players like Barry Bannan, Callum Paterson, and Akin Famewo, who are not technically new, is unclear, although it is believed that discussions are currently taking place on the subject. It is possible that the team will exceed the limit because the players are renewing their contracts rather than signing new ones.
The wage ceiling, like the 23-man limit, will expire once player payments are made and the embargo is lifted; but, as the Owls’ next payroll approaches, there is no assurance that they will be out of embargo any time soon.
