He will bounce back’ – Carlton Palmer delivers verdict on Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder sacking decision
Chris Wilder’s second spell in charge of Sheffield United has come to an abrupt end, and while the decision has drawn criticism from some quarters, former England international Carlton Palmer believes the 56-year-old will recover swiftly.
Earlier this week, Sheffield United confirmed the sacking of Wilder following their failure to secure promotion from the Championship. The Blades suffered a crushing play-off semi-final defeat to Norwich City, and the ownership – under increasing pressure to deliver Premier League football – opted for a fresh direction ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Wilder’s departure has sparked fierce debate among fans. After returning to Bramall Lane in December 2023 to replace Paul Heckingbottom, he revitalised a side in freefall, but ultimately couldn’t complete the job of taking them back to the top flight. The decision to let him go, despite his iconic status at the club and past achievements – including leading United from League One to the Premier League in his first stint – has left many supporters divided.
Speaking to local media, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer shared his thoughts on the dismissal.
> “It’s a harsh decision, but football doesn’t always care about sentiment,” Palmer said. “Chris is one of the best British managers around, and he’s proven that time and time again. He’ll bounce back. There’s no question.”
> “He brought structure, identity and passion back to Sheffield United. But the owners are clearly thinking short-term now. They’ve gambled on change, and they’ll have to live with the consequences if it doesn’t work out.”
There has been no official word yet on who will succeed Wilder, though early reports suggest the Blades are eyeing a younger, continental coach with a focus on progressive football and youth development. That in itself signals a potential shift in club philosophy, something that may take time to win over the fanbase.
Wilder, meanwhile, has not commented publicly since his departure. However, insiders say he was “bitterly disappointed” with the decision and felt he deserved another season to finish what he started. With a wealth of managerial experience and a strong reputation across the EFL, it’s unlikely he’ll be out of work for long.
> “He’ll get offers. Clubs will look at what he’s done not just at Sheffield United but also at Northampton and Oxford. He knows how to build something long-term. He’s got fire in his belly, and this setback will only fuel him.”
As Sheffield United prepare to start another new chapter, supporters will be watching closely to see whether the gamble pays off – or whether they’ll be left ruing the decision to part ways with the man who once led them to their greatest heights in a generation.
